After the Trojan War, Odysseus disappears for ten years in the Mediterranean Sea. On the island of Ithaca, his wife Penelope is overrun at the palace by suitors who try in every way to woo and force her to marry again. His son Telemachus decides to go searching for him. Odysseus, however, is not dead: he was captured by the nymph Calypso, who, after an intervention of the Gods, releases Odysseus. The hero sets sail, but is shipwrecked on an island. There, he is rescued by Princess Nausicaa, daughter of King Alcinous. The king welcomes Odysseus, who tries to conceal his identity. Finally revealed, he begins to tell about the adventures and travels he had on his way back from the Trojan War. One segment involves his encounter with Polyphemus, the Cyclops.
2 DVD-set, which I believe ranks right up there with "The World at War." The series describes the scientific advances and countermeasures by the British during the Second World War. It contains rare interviews with people who took part in the events described.
BRIEFE FLIEGEN UBER DEN OZEAN (1935): "Letters Fly Across the Ocean" is the title of a propaganda film produced by UFA under the direction of Fritz Kallab; it traces the journey of an airmail shipment from Berlin to Buenos Aires. The flight proceeds from Berlin-Tempelhof to Stuttgart, which was then a hub for airmail from across Europe. From there, the mail travels via Seville in southern Spain to Gran Canaria, heading for the Lufthansa maintenance base in Las Palmas. The next stop is the *Westfalen*, a floating airbase stationed off the African Atlantic coast. There, the shipments are transferred to a *Dornier Wal* a seaplane that crosses the Atlantic flying just a few meters above the water. Magnificent aerial shots of S o Paulo, Bahia, Rio de Janeiro, and other cities document the remainder of the flight to the Argentine capital Buenos Aires which is reached after three and a half days and a journey of 14,000 kilometers.
DIE BLITZZUGJAGD (1938): Rail engineer trainee Heinz Siebert bets that he can cross all of Germany by the country's express train routes in only four days. He wins his bet.
GERMAN CHRISTMAS (1938): A 1938 movie about German Christmas traditions and markets. It starts off with the holiday celebrations in Austrian and Bavarian mountain villages, showcasing the world-famous Christmas market in Nuremberg especially. Nevertheless, there is a less-than-subtle attempt to prioritize German Christmas traditions (such as the Solstice) over those imposed on the population by "alien" Christian introductions.
MUNSTER - WESTFALENS SCHONE HAUPTSTADT (1938): "M nster, Westphalia's beautiful capital" was a short documentary, cultural film produced by Ufa promoting Westphalia's capital for touristic and commercial purposes. Because the film was also intended for overseas distribution, its use of political symbols and propaganda were kept to a minimum.
ALT BERLIN (1939): A tourist rides around the Reichshauptstadt in a horse-drawn carriage and is given historical and cultural tips and wisdom by the elderly whip. Reissued in 1950, it was "cleaned up" a bit of its propaganda content.
WARTIME NEWSREEL # 478 (01.11.1939): This newsreel has footage of a ballet school in Berlin; Slovakian units returning home from their participation in the invasion of Poland; German soldiers on the Siegfried Line; German villages being cleared of mines after French troops pulled back from them; and a German long-range scout plane on duty above the North Sea.
TRAN UND HELLE (December 1939): Tran wakes up in a prison cell, unaware of how he got there. Helle visits him and enlightens him on his various, offensive actions from the night before, thanks to drinking too much alcohol.
DORFLEBEN IN WACHAU (1939): Very brief photographic montage of village life in the Wachau.
WARTIME NEWSREEL # 486 (26.12.1939): The Japanese land in China; German recruits are taught how to ride horses; battles on the Western Front; German fighter planes return from the Battle of Heligoland Bight; interview with fighter pilot Helmut Lent; German seaplanes monitoring merchant shipping.
WARTIME NEWSREEL (JUNE 1939): Silent Degeto Newsreel from June 1939, which begins with a propaganda piece about Danzig and showing footage of Goebbels visit to the city. This is followed by a report of Japanese advances in China; and, finally, about the rebuilding of the German Navy.
AFSCHEID VAN TOEKOMSTIGE SS SOLDATEN (1941): Historical film footage of the send-off of future SS soldiers in 1941, it primarily shows the departure of the Volunteer Legion Netherlands from Hollands Spoor station in The Hague on 26 July 1941 to Munich to be integrated into an SS Panzer division on the Eastern Front.
LEHRFILM NR.463 - UNTERNEHMEN GOTZ (1944): Military training film dealing with trench warfare and tactics for assault troops on the Eastern Front.

In the night from 31 August to 01 September 1939, the Nazis staged an attack on the radio station in Gleiwitz in Upper Silesia to justify the impending attack on Poland. SS-Hauptsturmfuhrer Naujoks was entrusted with this mission. Polish-speaking Volksdeutsche from the SS fencing school were dressed up as Polish soldiers to carry out the attack. A prisoner from a German concentration camp was also dressed up in a Polish uniform. He, however, was shot and left behind at the radio station to prove the attack was carried out by Poles.

When one watches a very old film, one has to expect something old-fashioned and rather fuddy-duddy. When one watches an old film, the script of which was co-written by Billy Wilder, one can expect something that is, above all, extremely funny and a pleasure to watch. Two window-cleaners with identical first names, one decent, the other more impulsive, compete in achieving the favor of a young girl, who dreams of being an actress in Hollywood.

ROADS BRING JOY (1939): Roads Bring Joy is a short film that presents an ideological overview of the Reich's highway construction. The film highlights technological progress, frames the Autobahn as a solution to unemployment, and promotes a utopian vision of a motorized, prosperous German life.
ALLES LEBEN IST KAMPF (1937): Alles Leben ist Kampf (All Life is Struggle) is a 1937 propaganda film directed by Herbert Gerdes and Werner H ttig. Produced by the Nazi Party's Office of Racial Policy (Rassenpolitisches Amt), this short documentary relies heavily on Social Darwinism to justify eugenic policies, specifically forced sterilization and the containment of disabled individuals.
ARBEITSMAIDEN IM KRIEGSHILFDIENST (1939): Propaganda short made by UfA in cooperation with RAD. It was released shortly after the outbreak of the Second World War to prepare young German women for mobilization into the war economy. The film follows a group of young women as they leave their city homes to enter strictly-organized RAD labor camps and begin their transition into active war support roles.
POMMERSCHES LAND (1968): Commissioned by West Germany's Federal Ministry for Displaced Persons, Refugees, and War Victims, the purpose of the film was to use old film material to preserve and document the cultural landscape of the former eastern territories of Germany, which were yielded to other nations and whose Germanic populations were forcibly expelled after 1945.
WARTIME NEWSREEL NR. 470 (07.09.1939): This UfA-Tonwoche was the first newsreel put out after the opening of the Second World War and was designed to justify the Reich's invasion of Poland. It portrays Volksdeutsche as having been the victims of Polish terror, as well as the capture of Danzig and the shelling of Westerplatte.
WARSAW SURRENDERS (1939): Short, silent film distributed to Degeto Weltspiegel to celebrate the fall of the Polish capital. It was cleared for public viewing on 02 December 1939.
WEHRMACHT LEHRFILM NR. 412b (1943): Aufkl rende Artillerie was produced in 1943 as a German military training film focused on specialized target acquisition, flash spotting, and acoustic sound-ranging techniques for observation detachments. The film details the deployment of sound-ranging batteries and the technical process of using calibrated test firing to locate enemy artillery
KITZBUHEL (1932): Culture film put out in Weimar Germany about the town.
KULTURFILM-WILNA (1943): Designed to be shown in cinemas before the main film, Kulturfilme were designed, among other things, to normalize the expansion of the Reich into foreign territories and/or present a heavily-altered view of reality. By 1943, Polish Wilno looked much different from what was shown in this film. Most of the city's vibrant and large Jewish community had by this time been shot in the Ponary forest 8km from the city and the German-established Jewish Ghetto was completely eradicated within months of the film being made. Amazingly, a very brief shot with narration shows the ghetto itself. There's extensive footage of the traditional Lithuanian Kaziukas Fair, a nod to German recognition of the city's Lithuanian population, although, prior to invasion, Wilno was majority Polish and Jewish. Idyllic views of the city and the peaceful life of people trading at open-air markets are emphasized, though anyone with a knowledge of what reality was back then can usually see what the cameras didn't want you to see.
MUTTER OSTPREUSSEN (1943): Originally made in 1936, the film can be dated to either 1943 or 1954 depending on how it was distributed after some monekying around with its content. It was designed to be a prewar Kulturfilm, but was altered in 1943 to foster regional morale in an area which would be in the crosshairs of the Red Army in the not-so-distant future. Its reissue in 1954 was designed to document the people and culture of the region before it was ceded to the Russians and Poles at war's end.
WOHNKULTUR (1928): Living Culture, As It Was, As It Is, and As It Should Be! is a rather rare, short documentary and social-interest feature which served as a stark look at the urban crisis and avant-garde architectural shift in Weimar-era Germany. Centering around the city of Koln, the film concentrates on the self-help associations, which charged members a minimal fee to contribute to the cost of building communal apartments.
AUF GROSSER FAHRT (1936): Film which centers on the cruiser Karlsruhe, a Konigsberg-class light cruiser in the service of the Kriegsmarine. The cruiser undertakes a massive training voyage, while, at the same time, showcasing Germany's might to nations where the ship docks. There's footage of routine maneuvers, onboard military training, and the daily life of young sailors at sea. More interesting, however, is the travellogue footage of South American, Latin American, and North American ports where the ship arrives and where its crew interacts with the locals; especially with the Auslanddeutschen, who live in these places, and, if the film is to be believed at face value, play a significant part in their adopted homes as "representatives" of the new German political situaiton (ie., fifth-columnists). As a footnote, the "peaceful" maritime activity of the Karlsruhe ended with its scuttling in 1940, when it was torpedoed by a British submarine during the invasion of Norway in April of that year.
The Childhood of Maxim Gorky (Detstvo Gorkovo) was the first of Russian director Mark Donski's trilogy based upon Gorky's memoirs. Alexei Lyarsky plays the young Maxim, who grows up under the czarist regime with his grandparents as guardians. Continually demeaned by his martinet grandfather, Maxim is drawn to his warm-hearted grandmother, who instills in him the willingness to pursue his writing muse. Gorky's deep abiding love for Russia is conveyed through the film's remarkably romantic landscape shots along the Volga River.
In the second part of the Maxim Gorky Trilogy, coming after The Childhood of Maxim Gorky, young Peshkov is working for a middle-class family, ostensibly as an apprentice to the architect in the family. The matriarch, however, is mean-spirited and does her best to prevent him learning anything. Instead, she harangues Peshkov constantly to perform menial tasks. The boy finds solace in books lent to him by a rich woman. When the family finally kicks him to the curb, he must find his own place in the world.
In the final installment of the Gorky Trilogy (The Childhood of Maxim Gorky; My Apprenticeship), Peshkov is in his later teen years and, too poor to make real his dream of studying in a university, takes a job as a baker working for a rather cruel boss, Semyonov. But Peshkov (Gorky) is now old enough to be aware of his political surroundings and it doesn't take him long to see the road that leads from oppressed worker to the oppressor employer, a realization which, in Russia, eventually led to the revolution to right capitalist wrongs, but instead led to communist oppression, where all were equal, but some men were more equal than others.
Joe works as a barber in a shop alongside manicurist Sally. He becomes infatuated with her and asks her out on a date; however, it's an awkward date and it's clear Sally doesn't feel the same way about Joe. Despite Sally's lack of interest, Joe's infatuation with her develops into an obsession. Meanwhile a regular client at the salon, young gentleman farmer Harry, begins to woo Sally, who is much more receptive to his attentions. The couple begin seeing each other and one evening, arrange to go to the local cinema. Unbeknownst to them, they're being stalked by the jealous and overwrought Joe, who sits behind them and is forced to witness their happiness. Joe eventually rushes out of the cinema in despair. The following day, Harry comes into the shop for his regular shave and manicure and Joe notices that Sally is wearing an engagement ring. A verbal confrontation between Joe and Harry escalates into a physical struggle, during which Harry is slashed by Joe's razor. Sally is convinced Joe deliberately tried to kill his rival and, following his arrest and trial, Joe is convicted of attempted murder. Vowing revenge on Sally and Harry, he's sentenced to a lengthy term of incarceration at the notorious Dartmoor Prison.
In 1963, the Frankfurt Auschwitz trial conducted over twenty months until 1965 against twenty SS perpetrators in Frankfurt am Main marked the opening of what was, up to that point, the largest jury trial in the history of the Federal Republic s justice system. Never before had so many survivors (211 individuals) of the central extermination camp been able to testify in such detail to the truth and reality of Auschwitz; nor had such an authentic picture of the National Socialist persecution of the Jews been presented to the world prior to the trial. Scarcely any other historical example illustrates more clearly the perfidious terror system of the SS and the methodology and systematic nature of total domination.

Farmer Grillhofer is growing old and frail. His housekeeper, Rosl, looks after him, while the head farmhand, Wastl, manages the farm. Grillhofer s brother-in-law, Dusterer, knows that twenty-five years ago, the farmer had an affair with his maid, Magdalen, who subsequently disappeared. Dusterer exploits this "worm of conscience" as he calls it to pressure Grillhofer into signing over his estate to him and his family; he claims this good deed would ensure Grillhofer s place in Heaven rather than leaving him to roast in Hell. Horlacherlies' with whom Wastl is in love is sent to Grillhofer by her aunt, as she is a distant relative of his. Although she is supposed to try and "wheedle an inheritance" out of him, she lays her cards on the table right away.

Count Almaviva arrives in Seville disguised as a poor student named Lindoro to woo Rosina, the wealthy ward of Dr. Bartolo. Almaviva meets Figaro, the town s clever barber and his former servant, who devises a plan to get the Count into Bartolo's heavily guarded house. Figaro suggests Almaviva disguise himself as a drunk soldier demanding a billet in Bartolo's home to get close to Rosina. The soldier ruse fails, so Almaviva returns disguised as "Don Alonso," a substitute music teacher claiming the regular teacher, Don Basilio, is sick. The real Don Basilio arrives unexpectedly, forcing Figaro and the lovers to bribe him into silence, before Bartolo eventually uncovers the trickery.
After an automobile accident, in which a man is unrecognizably burnt to a crisp, his wife's only able to confirm the corpse's identity by his talisman: a small, white spider. However, soon, there are more corpses walking around than at a comic con convention and every single one of them was a white spider sitting on or nearby the body.

Hailed as the first "talkie" to come out of the Soviet Union, Putyovka v Zhizn, became an instant hit in the USSR and soon after received equally high praise abroad in the USA and other western countries. It is a brutally realistic portrayal of the situation at the end of the Civil War in the USSR, when homeless children wandered the cities and countryside like abandoned, starving wolves, who terrorized their neighbors with banditry and violence. In the film, an order goes out in December 1923 to round up the homeless children and eliminate the unsightly plague from the sight of "sensitive" residents. But at a containment center, where the children are interviewed to determine what should be done with them, a kindly, but savvy, member of the "Children's Welfare Department" comes to the conclusion that reformatories and orphanages are not the answer. These children must be turned into creative, employed citizens ... the power of work and the feeling of accomplishment will turn them into new Soviet citizens, worthy of admiration and respect.
The Lebyazhyi Gorki Collective Farm, in the early 1930s: Gerasim Platonovich appears to be a dedicated livestock breeder on what was once his own property, but which has become a collective farm after the Bolshevik Revolution and Civil War. In fact, he has not abandoned his kulak roots and is determined to destroy the farm from within. Knowing full well that the collective has a severe shortage of animal feed, he deliberately breeds an enormous number of pigs. His goal is to exhaust the farm's resources, plunge the workers into despair, and break their faith in collectivization. His wife, Varvara, however, is fully dedicated to Soviet power and when she finds out what she's married to, the manure will hit the fan.
WE DIVE AT DAWN (1943): The British submarine Sea Tiger docks after an unsuccessful patrol and the skipper (John Mills) and his crew are given a week's leave. However, all leave is cancelled and the crew is ordered to return to the sub. Back at sea, the crew finds out that the Sea Tiger is on a top secret mission to find and destroy Nazi Germany's latest battleship, the Brandenburg. On their way to the port, from which Naval Intelligence thinks the battleship is sailing, the sub picks up three shot-down Luftwaffe pilots on a rescue buoy. But when the submarine enters a minefield, one of the airmen panics and it's soon revealed that the battleship has sailed through the Kiel Canal into the Baltic to begin sea trials. The skipper takes the decision to follow. When the Brandenburg is found, the Sea Tiger fires all its torpedoes, which leads to German destroyers dropping depth charges during pursuit of the submarine. The crew has no idea whether it has been successful or not.
FURY IN THE PACIFIC (1945): Fury in the Pacific is a 1945 documentary short film about a pair of World War II battles in the Pacific: the Battle of Peleliu and the Battle of Angaur. It was produced by the United States Army, United States Navy, and the United States Marines, and directed by a series of combat cameraman of whom nine became casualties of the battles they were filming. The film is especially noteworthy for its praise of the fighting abilities of Japanese soldiers (a rarity for American propaganda during World War II), and its fast-paced editing.
In Brazil, the prospector Vincente finds a huge diamond, the Star of Rio , and gives it to his bride, the dancer Concha. The stone, however, rightfully belongs to Don Felipe, who wishes to display it in Amsterdam. Concha travels with him and will show it off as a model. But during the presentation, the stone disappears and Concha is suspected of stealing it. Finally, detective Adrian is able to get on the track of the real culprits.

Count Egge, a special person of noble birth, is rather conceited and has given his kids the old heave-ho, because they chose unsuitable partners: Countess Litty picked the penniless painter Forbeck and Master Tassilo the rather common Anna. During a trip with his peasant lover, the second son of the Count, Willy, has a fatal accident. Kitty followers her painter-bum to Italy. One day, during a dramatic hunting party at the Eagle s Nest, Count Egge goes blind. These strokes of bad luck as of late turn the self-centered noble into an accessible person and his heart softens. After coming to terms with his kids, he finds inner peace in the bosom of his ancestral seat, shrouded in secrets: Castle Hubertus.

Unemployed Harry Palmer enthusiastically places himself at the service of his new neighbor, the attic-hobbyist Dr. Tobias Bern, in order to win a competition with him against the large electronics companies for the best discovery in the world of radio and television broadcasting sponsored by international broadcast companies. Due to a faulty connector, Harry "invents" a true far-seeing apparatus, a kind of invisible spy-eye, which, when manipulating the dials, can produce images from anywhere desired onto the screen of the machine. Understandably, this attracts the attention of the competition; and so, the South American industrialist Costa tries to get his hand on the machine through his middle man Merker. Harry, however, knows how to repel all such attack with ease ... that is, until Harry's girlfriend, the blond secretary Erika, is kidnapped by Merker.

Investigations reveal that the victim was involved in shady diamond dealings. The series of murders gradually unsettles London s criminal underworld, as it is not long before another jewel thief is found dead. Higgins decides to use a decoy to catch the "Joker," but the plan fails; despite being under surveillance, this man is also shot. The officers only notice a black Jaguar that had been near the crime scene before speeding away.

This 1930 version of the Dreyfus Affair, concerning the trial of a Jewish officer in France accused of treason, displays a number of talented artists, who were later to become stars in Nazi Germany. This should come as no surprise, however, since some of these actors had very different political attitudes prior to the takeover in 1933 (for example: Heinrich George, who, at the time of this filming, was very much a dedicated Communist). Interesting and sympathetic portrayal of the events.

Hans rettet den Tag, indem er sich als Chauffeur verkleidet und den Prinzen statt zum Hafen zur Polizei f hrt. Inzwischen hat auch Lisa l ngst erkannt, dass ihr Herz in Wirklichkeit Hans geh rt.
Germany's upper crust takes the Southern Express every winter to the Mediterranean. This is the case, too, for the young widow Lisa von Hellwitz, who has fallen in love with the waiter in the dining car, Hans. Lisa, however, is being pursued by the exotic Prince Tarnoff. When Lisa's jewellery is stolen, the police search the entire train, but they can't find anything. Hans is considered a suspect, but then released. He then gets a job in the hotel, where the Prince and Lisa are holed up. Schnebeli, the Prince's private detective is keeping an eye on Professor Degenfeld, who is occupying a hut on the beach and who is spying on the Prince (you following all this?). Degenfeld is soon able to prove the Prince is the jewel thief and the Prince manages to nearly drown him and his own private detective in the ocean. Luckily, Hans saves the day by disguising himself as a chauffeur and driving the Prince to the cops instead of to the harbor to make a getaway. In the interim, Lisa has figured out that she really wants the down-and-out penniless waiter and not the rich Prince. Uh huh .... just like real life.

In 1938, there was already a "railroad regiment" in the Wehrmacht and the role of the German railway in the Second World War showed its importance with the outbreak of the war in Russia in June 1941. This film consists of the private films -- some in color, most in black and white -- of those soldiers and civilians who served the war effort on German trains during WWII.
