You can't make a heart love somebody. This gospel is well known to the young Olenka. Born into a poor family, she has to marry a rich man to escape poverty. Three men fight for her heart: the glum widower Urbenin; the old count Karneyev; and the handsome Kamyshev. The choice seems obvious, but who would have known that it would all end in tragedy?
