Only at the king's court does he find some temporary semblance of friendship, but only because he's a lousy card player and loses huge sums to the king and his minions. They discover, however, that his pockets are empty and assume he's lost all he had. Without further ado, they toss him out on his rear end.

Israeli dramatization of the Kastner trial, which rocked Israeli society as no other Holocaust-related trial would until the capture of Eichmann some seven years later. What starts out as a defamation case turns into both a political stunt to uproot the ruling elite of 1950s Israel and an attempt ot justify the existence of the new, self-invented Jewish identity based on Zionism versus the rejected "Diaspora Mentality" of Holocaust victims. Did the State of Israel and its people find a convenient scapegoat to deflect its lack of desire to help Jews being murdered in Europe and, at the same time, create a new narrative that the victims themselves were to blame for their deaths? Was Kastner simply the victim of political expediency and the rejection by relatives of the murdered to accept that he could not have prevented the catastrophe? An insightful and moving drama showing both possiblities.

DIE FREUNDE MEINER FRAU - VIER JUNGE DETEKTIVE (1949): Walter Brinkmann is the epitome of an over-correct, loyal German bourgeois who always makes sure that customs and order always prevail in his home with his wife and three underage children. The free spirit and lyricist Bernd Freiberg, who Walter advises on financial matters, is the exact opposite of Walter. He invites Brinkmann to a cabaret, for which he provides song lyrics that his sister Fee sings. Freiberg is hoping that the father of the family will thaw out a bit and get to know the relaxed and funny side of life. When Walter actually attends the performance with his wife, Freiberg holds up a mirror to him with a Brinkmann parody. While everyone in the audience laughs, Walter is deeply outraged, believing that he is nothing like Freiberg portrays. But soon he also realizes that he lacks the lightness of being and that he should dare to do something, sometimes, to go out of his way; to outwit his own pedantic ego.
