Based on the autobiography of Axel Munthe, the film illustrates episodes from the Swedish doctor's dazzling life and highlights his amorous affairs, as well as the stages of his medical career: his encounter with Louis Pasteur in Paris; his engagement as a doctor for the poor; his rise in the French medical profession Society; his fight against cholera in Naples; and his settling in Rome. As a mature gentleman, Munthe finally retreats to the island of Capri and writes "The Book of San Michele" there.

Basierend auf der Autobiographie von Axel Munthe illustriert der Film Episoden aus dem schillernden Leben des schwedischen Arztes und beleuchtet dabei seine amourösen Affären ebenso wie die Stationen seiner medizinischen Karriere: seine Begegnung mit Louis Pasteur in Paris, sein Engagement als Armenarzt und seinen Aufstieg in der französischen Gesellschaft, seinen Kampf gegen die Cholera in Neapel und seine Niederlassung in Rom. Als gereifter Herr zieht Munthe sich schließlich auf die Insel Capri zurück und verfasst dort "Das Buch von San Michele".
