A young woman is more than ready to marry her fiancee. The problem? She's kept the tiny fact secret from him that she's already a mother with a 1 1/2 year old child. What to do? Be honest with the man and possibly drive him away? Well, "trust" isn't exactly important in a relationship, right? So, she decides the kid's gotta go. Enter Hieronymus Spitz, a fanatical dog lover with an equal dislike for people. While on a train, mommy dearest excuses herself to go to the powder room, entrusts the kid to Hieronymus' unwilling arms, and promptly runs away. What's a man to do? Hieronymus, who wants absolutely nothing to do with any child, is compelled to take it home. In the meantime, the lovingly single mother has married her fiancee and wants very much to emigrate to another country. Nice person, huh?

Eine junge Frau hat vor ihrem Verlobtem verheimlicht, dass sie bereits Mutter eines anderthalbjährigen Kindes ist. In ihrer Not drückt sie den kleinen Niki auf einer Zugfahrt einem alten Herrn in den Arm, dem Finanzbeamten Hieronymus Spitz, der zwar ein Hunde- aber kein Menschenfreund ist und das Kind so schnell wie möglich wieder loswerden will. Aber als die Mutter nicht zurückkommt und ihm auch sonst keiner das Kind abnehmen will, bleibt Spitz nichts anderes übrig, als Niki mit nach Hause zu nehmen. Inzwischen heiratet die junge Mutter ihren Verlobten und will mit ihm auswandern.
