Lena, a Polish Jew who survived the Holocaust, returns to Krakow only to encounter a continuation of the prewar prejudice, violence, and hatred against Jews, but now, in a postwar Poland being torn apart in an unofficial "civil war". Searching for her sister, a former partisan in the Sokolow region, she encounters orphans at Krakow's Jewish community center who are malnourished and left to their impending, terrible fate. Lena must confront a nation disinterested in the survival of its formerly large minority, and a religous community overwhelmed with providing for the remnants, for which they have almost no aid and no real rights in reborn Poland. Against all chances of success in saving them, Lena "adopts" the children and prepares them for their new lives.
