Toddlers Belu and Bhola share an uncertain future when their mom dies of the plague, and their dad is imprisoned. They are then left in the uncaring care of Kamla, their aunt, who moonlights as a prostitute. She is cruel, abusive, and forces them to beg on trains, on beaches and in crowded areas in Bombay. This is how the toddlers grow up: they want to lead a respectable life, and with the help of bootlegger John, they get a shoe-shine kit and start shining shoes on busy sidewalks and railway platforms. Their circumstances face more uncertainty when Kamla finds out about their new-found profession, beats them up and throws them out of the house. They temporarily seek shelter with John, but when he is arrested, they have to fend for themselves. Things become bad to worse when Bombay enters the monsoon season, when people do not get their shoes shined; then the duo are separated - with Belu ending up with a rich family, and when she asks about Bhola, she is told that he is dead. The question remains is Bhola really dead, if not, what has been his fate?

FAST AND FURIOUS (1927): Tom Brown, a wealthy young bachelor fond of speeding, wrecks his car and is aided by Smithfield, whereupon he instantly becomes enamored of the latter's daughter, Ethel. After recuperating from the accident, Tom embarks for California to find the Smithfields. During a traffic jam, he and Smithfield get into an altercation, which results in Tom's tweaking Smithfield's nose; at the Smithfield residence, Tom visits Ethel, who is supervising the creation of a statue dedicated by her father to racing drivers. Tom agrees to impersonate Billings, a racing champion, who is to pose for the sculptor and appear at the dedication, and is forced to complete the deception by driving in a race. A NARROW ESCAPE (1920): The marquis de Granier would like his son Charles to end his current relationship for a respectable marriage. His younger brother Octave tries to help, but Yvonne Lelys tricks him and he nearly leaves his family for the dancer. He even follows her to Constantinople.
WHERE THE NORTH BEGINS (1923): A German Shepherd puppy is "adopted" by a wolf pack in the snowy and frozen Great North and raised by them as one of their own. A few years later, he comes upon a fur trapper and saves the man from certain death, and begins to feel a kinship with him that is stronger than the one he has with his adopted pack. TIMOTHY'S QUEST (1922): Timothy, an orphan of the slums, and "Lady Gay," the little girl he protects, strike out for the country rather than go to an asylum. They select the home of Miss Avilda Cummins and ask to be adopted. She and her "help," Samantha Ann Ripley (also a spinster), take a harsh attitude toward the children, but take them in for the night and eventually soften. When Timothy overhears Avilda's plan to adopt Lady Gay and send him to an asylum, he decides to move on, but he lingers to tell Samantha of a man living in a lonely house who calls out "Samanthy."

What Toni doesn't know is that the wardrobe mistress is a Baroness, whose husband was killed in the Great War. Rather than lose her old life, she works, and when she gets her husband's yearly check, she lives in Monte Carlo the way she did before the war, until her money runs out, and then she returns to Budapest. The Baroness introduces Toni as her daughter; she is, henceforth, the Baroness' ward. OLD SAN FRANCISCO (1927): The Vasquez family is one of the oldest families in San Francisco, but their day of glory is past and now all that remains of them are an old man and his granddaughter, the innocent Dolores. Villainous Chris Buckwell wants to steal their land and ranch from them, even using unfair means to get his hands on it. One of his employees has a nephew who falls for Dolores, however, and together they make plans to save the ranch. Unfortunately for them, Buckwell has a secret and discovering it might prove dangerous.

The lustful Comte Guillot de Morfontaine offers Andr a tempting sum for Manon, and learning of their bargain, Fabien takes her to Paris, where they spend an idyllic week in a garret. Andr finds her, persuades her to leave Fabien, and tries to force her into an alliance with Morfontaine then rescues Manon from the advances of a brutal Apache.
EYES OF THE TOTEM (1927): Mariam Hardy, young daughter Betty, and husband Jim live in a log cabin in the desolate and frozen north, where Jim works their mining claim. Mariam longs for a normal life in the civilized world. Her husband returns one day with cash and the news that he has sold the claim. They board a steamer bound for Tacoma. Upon reaching the city, Jim is murdered and the cash stolen by a mysterious steely-eyed stranger. Left penniless with a small child to care for, Mariam becomes a beggar. Over the years, she becomes a respectable member of society, but she always keeps a watch for the eyes of the murderer. THE SCAR OF SHAME (1929): An educated, upscale, black musician marries a woman from a lower socioeconomic class to get her out of the clutches of her stepfather, who beats and abuses her. However, once he "saves" her, he won't let his new wife meet his mother, as he knows she will be angry and disappointed with him for marrying someone "below his station".
In 1915, German Counter-Intelligence von Sturm learns that someone is providing the British with critical strategic planning for the Turkish theater. She runs from the mob and finds refuge with a Russian painter, Kusmin, who lives and works in an atelier. Mah ends up modeling for him and falls in love with the painter who took her off the street. Eventually, Kusmin gives her a check to cash at the bank, after selling a painting of her to a baron (who also admires her on first sight). Mary, a poor farm girl, meets Tim, just as word comes that war has been declared. Tim enlists in the army and goes to the battlefields of Europe, where he is wounded and loses the use of his legs. Victor is infatuated with Mabel, but she rejects his advances, since she is in love with Valentine Wilmot, the club's owner. As Mabel and Vic perform their act one night, a customer, unhappy about a dirty plate, causes a disruption. When Wilmot goes back to the kitchen to investigate, he finds several employees in the scullery watching Shosho, one of the dishwashers, dancing on a table. Wilmot fires both Shosho and Victor that night, but the club's sagging fortunes soon lead him to re-evaluate Shosho's talent.

It's in another club, and he stays longer than he should, and drinks more than he should. Late at night, the club owner asks him for help with the accounts, and Brinkmeyer agrees, and stays even later going through the books, and drinking, with help from a dancer, Rita. Dr. Hans Ravenborg, his wife Inge and their small son Peter are a happy family. Hans spends a lot of time in the tropical institute doing animal experimentation to cure a disease.
