In the seemingly infinite expanse of Mongolia s barren, sparsely forested karst landscape, one finds only a few yurts belonging to farming families who keep herds of sheep and goats usually horses as well, and, if they are prosperous, camels for transport and oxen as draft animals. However, these animals are not used for harrows or plows; for even in the socialist People's Republic of Mongolia, situated on the border with China, the prohibition issued by the Buddhist priests known as Lamas against breaking the surface of sacred Mother Earth remains in force. Wise Arat, however, defies this ban and sows grain outside his sprawling karst cave to combat the rampant famine plaguing the land. Many years earlier, he had entrusted a chest to the herdsman Pagwa with the strict instruction never to show it to anyone and never to open it. Although it contains neither money nor gold, he explained, as long as it remains locked, it provides the most precious commodity for the farmers: water for humans, animals, and plants alike.

Vor vielen Jahren hat er dem Hirten Pagwa eine Truhe vermacht mit dem dringenden Hinweis, sie niemandem zu zeigen und sie nicht zu ffnen. Sie enthalte zwar weder Geld noch Gold, daf r aber sorge sie im verschlossenen Zustand f r das Wertvollste f r die Bauern: Wasser f r Menschen, Tiere und Pflanzen.

A STRING OF PEARLS (1926): A husband borrows a pearl necklace from a jeweller-friend for his wife to wear to a party. It is much admired at the party, but she is followed home by a burglar who breaks in and steals it. The next morning, the friend needs it back. It belongs to a customer he had been repairing it for. Excuses are made and they promise to return it later. They try to borrow money from friends to buy another, but without much success. Eventually, driven to desperation, the husband steals money from where he works and buys a replacement, which is returned to the owner. The husband, however, was seen taking the money from the safe at work, and is duly fired.

Dark-humored drama involving a scrupulously honest lawyer, Franciszek Murek, being let go from his job in a provincial town after refusing to take part in an improper business deal. Positive he'll be able to find another job soon, he discovers his former bosses are blackballing him when his references are checked. And so begins his downfall, throughout which Murek consistently displays a very poor understanding of human nature --- especially women's human nature --- in spite of his bookish intelligence. He is used; uses others; and even destroys the very people who will save him from a certain death.
Set against the backdrop of a repressed Czechoslovakia, five non-related vignettes are presented, each showcasing the need and want for human connection. In "Mr. Baltazar's Death", a middle aged couple, who are expert mechanics, travel to a motorcycle race, where they congregate with the masses at a spot where, historically, there have been lots of accidents. Each man wants to hear about the other more than tell his own story for good reason. In "The House of Joy", two national insurance agents believe they have an easy sale, when they visit an elderly goat farmer and amateur painter, who uses whatever surface is available as his canvass. But the sale will not be as easy as the men first believe it will be. In "The Restaurant the World", a wedding reception is taking place in part of a busy self-service diner. The reception guests are oblivious to the sadness of life taking place all around them with the bride determined to make the most of *her* night. And in "Romance", a working class lad, out on the town on his own, is mesmerized by a young gypsy girl.

Filmed late in his career, none of Heinz R hmann's charm or wit is missing in this 1956 adaptation of the original 1931 film. The shoemaker Wilhelm Voigt wishes to leave Prussia after spending years in prison. In order to get a passport, Voigt disguises himself as a captain, takes a corporal and five soldiers under his command, and occupies the town hall of K penick. Unfortunately, there's no passport office in K penick and Voigt ends up back in jail.
Germany at the time of the Napoleonic occupation: The somewhat boyish-looking Johanna is on a journey to Braunschweig with her mother. Sitting next to them in the carriage is a German major named Korfes and the somewhat dubious-appearing Dr. Frost. For many years, Ulrich, the forester, and Steinbach, the landowner, have been the best of friends. The actor Ferdinand Hofer has a cyst in his brain and must be operated on as soon as possible to save his life. For Christine, Ferdinand is no unknown entity: They were once lovers ... and when Christine sees how happy Ferdi is to see her, she confesses she is still in love with him (classy). The professor has overheard the conversation and decides Ferdinand should contact his HMO to find another sap to operate on him.

About the life and heroic death of the old Bolshevik-Luhansk resident, participant in the civil war, Aleksandr Yakovlevich Parkhomenko. In 1918, capturing Ukraine, the German occupiers sought to use the Haidamaks, the White Guards and the Greens in their struggle. By order of Voroshilov, Aleksandr Parkhomenko from Luhansk arrives in Tsaritsyn (the future "Stalingrad"). At the same time, the Germans launched an active offensive. The "Red" battalions are poorly armed, however, Parkhomenko manages to raise them to the attack and put the enemy to flight. As is the usual with Soviet propaganda films --- especially wartime ones --- the history is somewhat questionable at times (like the Red Army engaging the Germans, which rarely happened and did not result in the Germans being beaten). The portrayal of the historical characters is visibly very good; especially that of Stalin, portrayed by a Jewish actor, which, given Stalin's intense dislike of that ethnic group, must have annoyed the Great Leader to no end.
The Ukraine, sometime during the Civil War (1918 - 21): A landowner and his family flee their estate, when Bolshevik troops appear on the outskirts of the town. Their faithful doorman, Anton, stays behind to guard the family valuables, which he's buried in the garden. In the chaos of flight, the landowner's son gets separated from his family and returns to the estate. Anton hides him in the home's small attic. That evening, Bolsheviks --- commanded by Anton's son, Andriy --- occupy the mansion. Anton doesn't share his son's radical views and restrains himself from showing affection to the boy.
After the sentencing and execution of the counterfeiter and bank robber Shelton, Scotland Yard is ready to finally close the file on another captured crook. But, oh: Not so fast! Shortly after the criminal is hanged, one corpse after another keeps landing at Scotland Yard's door; and they all have one thing in common: they all had a hand in Shelton's execution. Is it revenge? On the train to Berlin, Emil Tischbein shares a compartment with the common criminal Grundeis, who sounds out the boy and eventually steals the money he's supposed to bring to his grandmother. Once the train arrives in Berlin, Emil wants to take up the pursuit of the thief, because he can't bear to face his grandmother without the money. With the active help of a few Berlin kids and his cousin Ponyhutchen, the hunt for the criminal begins.
Disappointed by the marriage of her lover to a woman he does not love, prostitute Harumi drifts from the city to a remote Japanese outpost in Manchuria to work in a "comfort house," or brothel, during the Sino-Japanese War. The commanding adjutant there takes an immediate liking to the new girl, but she is fascinated by and comes to love Mikami, the officer's aide. At first, he is haughty and indifferent to the girl, which enrages her; but they are eventually drawn together. Abused and manipulated, she seeks solace in Mikami's arms. They carry on a clandestine affair, which is a dangerous breach of code for both of them.

Each part has variable film quality based on the original films it shows. Overall, we would say the quality would correspond to a range of well worn VHS to very good DVD quality. There may be some sound or picture issues on parts of the film.
In this last Yiddish film made in Poland before the outbreak of the Second World War, Without a Home is the story of separation and hardship faced by immigrants to America at the turn of the 19th into the 20th Century. It focuses on the bleak prospects for the survival of traditional Jewish family values in the story of the Rivkin famliy. When their eldest son is found drowned, the father leaves his family in Europe and moves to America. But he finds only financial hardship and loneliness there, while struggling to find a way to bring his family over. The film, based on a 1907 work by Jacob Gordin, was meant to symbolize the uprooted Jewish family and its difficulty in adjusting to a new life in a new home. By extension, this applied as well to the Jewish people, constantly uprooted and expelled throughout European history. Considering the ever-increasing anti-Semitism in Poland and the threat of Nazi aggression against its eastern neighbor, it couldn't have been lost on Polish Jews who saw the film that its final message of "May we never be without a home again" might apply to them very soon.
A long time ago, John Miller emigrated from Germany to America. Now he wants his daughter Eleanor to get to know his old homeland and sends her off to Heidelberg, where she is to study for a year. Pretty soon, the pretty young girl is in demand among the young men in town. Especially the students Dahlber and Bornemann, who try to win Eleanor's heart. When she turns to Dahlberg, Bornemann gets jealous and plots revenger. During a drinking bout, he provokes his rival and is challenged to a duel by saber. On the night of the duel, Eleanor tracks down Dahlberg and begs him to call off the duel.
