Russia during the Time of Troubles: the Rurik dynasty had been extinguished withe the death of Ivan the Terrible's sickly son. For 15 years after this, multiple rivals attempted to seize the tsardom. For more than three centuries, the balance of power between Poland Russia had been so heavily in Russia's favor that it was unimaginable that Poland would ever subjugate their eastern neighbors; but now, Russia was greatly weakened by the internal struggles. The Poles and Swedes, Muscovy's traditional enemies, now invaded and exploited false pretenders to gain the Russian throne. Vasily Shuisky removed one of these pretenders and declared himself Tsar Vasily IV of Russia. He enjoyed little support and a council of boyars invited Polish Crown Prince Wladyslaw to become Tsar in an attempt to end the Polish invasion. However, the Polish King (also Wladyslaw) had designs on Muscovy, too. He prevented the Crown Prince from traveling to Moscow and sent troops loyal to himself to occupy the Kremlin in 1611. That same year, Russian insurrectionists started a crusade to expel the Poles. Prince Pozharsky and Kuzmin Minin, a butcher, weren't among these first insurrectionists, but they did lead the second attempt to finally rid Russia of its foreign overlords.
SABUHI (1941) * with optional English subtitles * . Soviet telling of the life Mirza Fatali Akhundov, an Azerbaijani educator, playwright, and philosopher. In the movie, he is shown as a devoted son of his people and a fiery fighter for the progressive ideas of his time. We see Akhundov traveling to Ottoman Istanbul in his quest to reform the alphabet, as well as his struggles to educate his people, ensnared in the ignorance of an Islam controlled by corrupt mullahs. That the film slams both Tsarist colonial ambitions and the foundations of Sharia Islam in the Caucasus in pre-revolutionary Russia, certainly offended no Bolshevik in the Stalinist USSR (though its treading into the area of supporting Azerbaijani nationalism must have provided for some tense moments with the censors; especially the parts which called the Caucasian peoples to shake off their inertia, sadness, and pessimism to win back their freedom from Russian dominance and conniving religious leaders).
Toru, a tabloid reporter whose bosses will only accept stories loaded with sensationalism and scandal, thinks he's found a lead in the form of Hoshino, a high-powered music kingpin, whose current pop goddess is Yoko. Toru suspects the guy is doping up his singers to keep them performing under his thumb, and he aims to prove it by cornering Yoko in a bathroom stall to extract a urine sample in the most unorthodox fashion possible. However, things take a gritty turn when Yoko gets abducted by some sex-crazed criminals and held for ransom at a house outside of town, where she's subjected to a number of carnal indignities. Toru uses his reporting skills to track her down, though of course his true motivations are a bit questionable and only become apparent in the finale.
This is an adaptation of the Grimm fairy tale about a poor apprenticed tailor, who manages to kill seven flies with one swat of a stick. The story goes around, however, that it was seven men he killed and everyone thinks him incredibly brave and skilled. Of course, the little tailor does nothing to correct the misconception and when he shows up at the king's castle, both the royal guard and the royal court are terrified of this "Knight Seven with one Swipe". Prince Conceited feels threatened by the little, but bold, knight and encourages the king to send the boy on a number of missions to be finally rid of him (as in "permanently"). But what will the little tailor's fate be?

Othello is an incomparable military hero in the service of Venice. He's as handsome as he is brilliant and the charm of his personality has won over beautiful Desdemona. But the successful general is a Moor and a black one at that. While overt racism is never superficially shown, Othello's heritage isolates him from the Venetian nobility which surround him. Only when Venice is threatened by the Turk is Othello sought out eagerly. Iago is envious of him; and convinced that his inability to rise in the ranks is due to Othello, schemes against him. Iago plants fake evidence of Desdemona's infidelity and, pretending to be Othello's friend, provokes his suspicion and jealousy. Othello eventually loses control of himself and kills Desdemona. Too late, he realizes the mistake that jealousy and rage have caused him to make and he pays the ultimate price for doing so.
A grand festival is given on the occasion of the birth of a daughter to the king and queen. To this festival, twelve fairies have been invited, who bring wishes of wealth, beauty, joy, and more to the child in the crib. But the king has shown great disrespect to a thirteenth fairy --- that of "diligence" --- by not inviting her to the celebration. The captain of the guard admits the uninvited fairy into the castle and, out of anger, wishes death upon Sleeping Beauty. However, the twelfth fairy overrides the wish: when the child pricks its finger on a spinning wheel on her 15th birthday, she shall not die, but fall into a 100-year sleep. And so, the king bans every spinning wheel from the country, which just happens to drive all the working class into financial distress. One wheel has been overlooked, however, and the curse will thus be fulfilled.

This DVD consists of two parts; the first one dealing with the legendary PzKw V tank, known as the Panther; the second part dealing with infantry weapons and tactics as used and practiced in the Second World War. The quality of the films depends on the source material used, but overall, they are very good. Discussions, interviews and pictorial review of the subject matters make this a DVD of interest to both the amateur hobbyist and the serious historian.
The sculptor Peter Brake, an early supporter of the National Socialists, is an enemy of modern art, which he considers decedent. To set an example, he sculpts a statue of Venus in the style of the Greek antiquity and buries it in a forest. When it's dug up in 1930, it's considered to be a 2 000 year old, antique statue. Peter tells the court, that he is the creator of the statue, but no one believes him and he is threatened with a charge of perjury. The only person who can verify the veracity of Peter's claim is the young girl, who posed for the sculpture. But since she has in the meantime married the mayor, Peter doesn't want to cause any problems for her and so keeps his mouth shut.

Part 1: Sturm und Drang: In the first part, the young Crown Prince is introduced to us. Displayed is Friedrich's artistic talents, for which his strict father, the Margrave of Brandenburg and Prussian king, Friedrich Wilhelm I, has little understanding and patience. It isn't long before there's a conflict between Friedrich's interests and wishes on the one side, and the expectations of his father, the "Soldier King", who wishes to see Friedrich disciplined for his future role as the head of state. But the two men are irreconcilable opposites. The bitter rift between father and son eventually culminates in the prince's imprisonment and the execution of his best friend, von Katte.
Part 2: Father and Son: Crown Prince Friedrich, in the meantime pardoned by his father, is drawn ever closer to his musical interests, which leads to a constant conflict with the king. The strict monarch is determined to make the crown prince ready for the military and economic duties he will inherit as Friedrich II. Finally, Friedrich is compelled to matter the daughter of a duke, Elisabeth Christine von Braunschweig-Bevern. When his father dies in 1740, Friedrich becomes king.
Part 3: Sanssouci: In this part, we see Friedrich in his life as a new king. In Potsdam, he has the palace Sanssouci built, which will fulfill his desire to create a place of intellectual and artistic life. As the new King of Prussia, Friedrich endeavors to translate the ideals of his youth into high politics. He orders the abolition of torture and establishes freedom of religion. He patronizes the arts and cultivates a close relationship with the French philosopher Voltaire, whom he invites to Sanssouci to exchange philosophical ideas.

Until the 1990s and the final fall of Communism in the former Soviet Union, a great deal of film, both documentary and drama, about the Great Patriotic War was almost completely off-limits to the West. This included a great deal of captured German archival material, which was locked away in vaults and only re-discovered in the following century. Still, a great deal of these materials are still hard to come by west of the Bug River and nearly completely unknown across the Atlantic.
