The Devil has his work cut out for him, and doesn't appear likely to escape being replaced by the German leader.
THE CURSE OF THE SWASTIKA (1940): The Curse of The Swastika, a British Pathe documentary from 1940, illustrates the insidious rise of Adolf Hitler's conniving to become the leader of the Nazi party and eventual dictator of his self-styled Third Reich.

Lieutenant Zauner, Archduke Ludwig's adjutant, has once again used his boss's car to visit his girlfriend, the dancer Anni W hrer, at the Imperial Opera. She is disappointed that Zauner doesn't want to take her on the imperial vacation to Ischl and travels there on her own. In Ischl, Ludwig meets the teacher Luise Pichler, when she and her students sing the Kaiser Waltz, set to music by teacher Resinger for the first time. Ludwig falls in love with Luise and, since he is in civilian clothes, pretends to be Lieutenant Zauner. Both meet several times and also meet the Captain Krause on a mountain pasture. Empress Elisabeth also appears on the mountain pasture and the children sing the Imperial Waltz to her. Elisabeth invites Luise and the children to perform the Imperial Waltz for the Emperor's birthday.

THE GHOST COMES HOME (1940): Mild mannered Vern runs a pet store that seems to gather more pets than he sells. One day, he receives a telephone call from John 'old fishface' Thomas in Australia. He wants to leave a considerable amount to the town and Vern is to come down and help him decide where it should go. Vern goes to the Inter Pacific Steam Lines to catch the ship and with hours until sailing, heads to a nightclub to hear his favorite band. Vern winds up doing 60 days in jail. When he gets out, he goes home to find that the 'Mariluna' had sunk with all hands and that the family has already spent the travel insurance money. So Vern hides out to keep everyone from going to jail for fraud. But mild mannered Vern soon becomes a tiger and he and Lanny need to figure a way out of his predicament.
TEN LAPS TO GO (1936): Larry Evans, champion race car driver, is envied by his chief rival, Eddie DeSylva, who has more ambitions than merely winning the races; he has designs on a motor patent held by Corbett, Larry's employer. Eddie also has a yen for Corbett's daughter, Norma, who prefers Larry. Eddie intentionally causes a race wreck that injures Larry and sends him to the hospital. Larry emerges from the hospital and finds his morale and courage has been broken when he falters while chasing some DeSylva henchmen who have robbed Corbett of some blueprints.

THE IDOL DANCER (1920): Mary, a beautiful girl raised with the natives of a South Sea island, gradually arouses the passion of beachcomber Dan McGuire, a derelict and a drunkard. Walter is attracted to Mary, who uses his infatuation to inflame Dan's jealousy. THE LOVE FLOWER (1920): Stella Bevan sees her father come home from an unjust imprisonment only to become involved in the death of a man he catches with his second wife, Stella's stepmother. Crane, the detective responsible for Bevan's first conviction, ties the killing to him again, forcing Stella and her father to flee to a far away island in the South Pacific. There Stella meets Trevethon, who docks at the harbor and falls in love with the young fugitive. But in a country where the Stasi monitors the moves of all suspicious people (such as Konrad's sister Barbara and her husband Harald), preserving one's privacy, ideals and self-respect becomes an exhausting fight, even as the Eastern block begins its long process of disintegration.

The great Russian poet and novelist Aleksandr Pushkin is a jealous man; fiercely protective of his marriage to Natalie Pushkina. Tsar Nikolas I is attracted to Natalie and attempts to seduce her. The effects of sterility and jealousy on a marriage are played out against the backdrop of World War II and the rising Hungartian persecution of Jews. Sylvia cannot have children, so she convinces a married Jewish woman Irene to have a child and then give it up to her for adoption. The plan works, but it also backfires. The way in which the child was adopted causes friction between Sylvia and her husband, and to make matters worse, Sylvia s husband falls in love with Irene. A crisis looms when he asks his jealous wife to give Irene her identity papers, because Jews are being deported and Irene will die without their help.

Set against the backdrop of a repressed Czechoslovakia, five non-related vignettes are presented, each showcasing the need and want for human connection. In "Mr. Baltazar's Death", a middle aged couple, who are expert mechanics, travel to a motorcycle race, where they congregate with the masses at a spot where, historically, there have been lots of accidents. In "Imposters", two elderly hospital patients talk about their past professional glories as a journalist and light opera star, respectively. Each man wants to hear about the other more than tell his own story for good reason. In "The House of Joy", two national insurance agents believe they have an easy sale, when they visit an elderly goat farmer and amateur painter, who uses whatever surface is available as his canvass. But the sale will not be as easy as the men first believe it will be. In "The Restaurant the World", a wedding reception is taking place in part of a busy self-service diner. The reception guests are oblivious to the sadness of life taking place all around them with the bride determined to make the most of *her* night. And in "Romance", a working class lad, out on the town on his own, is mesmerized by a young gypsy girl.

Knut Hamsun was Norway's most famous and admired author. Ever since he was young, he had hated the English for the starvation they caused Norway during World War I. When the Germans occupy Norway on April 9, 1940, he welcomes them and the protection they can give from Great Britain. He supports National Socialist ideals, but opposes the way these ideals are turned into action - that Norwegians are jailed and executed. His wife Marie travels in Germany during the war as a sign of support from Knut and herself.
Shakespearian actor Fred Wimbush is drafted into the British Army to entertain the troops defending England from the Germans. But while he's entertaining the soldiers with his drag act, the Germans arrive and capture them. Thinking he's a girl, they let him go. He mustn't break his character until he reaches safety.

Romolo and Salvatore are two young men, who are neighbors and friends. They live with their parents in the Piazza Navona in Rome. They are poor, but handsome, and both fall in love with the beautiful Giovanna.

The story begins when beautiful Nina loses a bracelet during a masked ball. Another woman finds it and without revealing who she is, gives it to an ardent cavalry officer at the ball. This officer had earlier spent the evening learning how to gamble from Nina's husband Arbenin. When the young officer shows the bracelet to Arbenin, he starts to suspect that he has been betrayed by his wife. The film depicts the effects of Arbenin's jealousy on everyone around the couple, leading to a quarrel with and calculated humiliation of the officer, Arbenin poisoning his wife, and finishing with a strange out of left field "I told you so" from someone who Arbenin had injured a decade earlier.
OPERATION Y AND SHURIK S OTHER ADVENTURES (1965) * with hard-encoded English subtitles *
The movie consists of three parts, each of them about Shurik, a nerdy student.. In "Naparnik" ("Partner"), Shurik has a fight in a bus with a bully named Fedya, because Fedya doesn't want to allow a pregnant woman to take his seat. Fedya is punished by community work at a construction site, where Shurik also works part-time. Of course, Fedya wants revenge... In "Navazhdenie" ("Strange Impression"), It's final exam time. Shurik (like other students) is very busy trying to find material to study. Suddenly, he notices the necessary material in someone else's hands. Shurik follows this person all over the city, reading over his shoulder, not even noticing who this person is and where they are going. The next day, after having met a beautiful girl, Shurik constantly has an impression that he's already seen her, visited her apartment etc... In "Operatsiya Y" ("Operation Y"), a depository director, trying to cover up embezzlement, hires crooks to simulate a robbery. The plan is to get there at night, overpower an old lady guard and break a few things to make the impression there was a big crime. The problem is that the very night the operation is planned for, the old lady-guard asks the tenant of her apartment (that of course happens to be Shurik) to guard the depository for her.

In Tokyo, Osen is the servant girl of an unscrupulous antiques dealer, Kumazawa, who takes in the penniless Sokichi Hata. Kumazawa mistreats Sokichi and Osen, while swindling some Buddhist monks out of their temple treasures. When Kumazawa is arrested, Osen agrees to help Sokichi finance his dream of going to medical school. They live in a humble room, and eventually the only way Osen can find enough money for them is to prostitute herself during the day, without Sokichi knowing.

Picchio, a former cabaret artist, moves into Villa Serena, a retirement home for entertainers, where he meets many of his old colleagues. He also meets Renata there, a young and beautiful employee, whom he hits on and who promptly rejects his advances. However, when he receives a large pension check, she suddenly takes a liking to him and agrees to run away with him to Rome, where he promises to launch her into show business (while reactivating his own career, too).
. American biopic about Stephen Foster, a songwriter from Pittsburgh, who falls in love with the South, marries a Southern girl, then is accused of sympathizing when the Civil War breaks out. The film is usually classified as a "biography", but playing with the facts of history makes it more fiction than a life story.

The selling of daughters was shockingly common during this time period, particularly in the rural Tohoku region of northeast Japan. Known as the rice basket of Japan, the Tohoku region suffered a severe famine in the early 1930s, leading many fathers to sell their daughters, just to make ends meet. Although this practice had a long history in both China and Japan, the experiences during the Great Depression fueled many young officers desire for radical reform in the shape of a coup d tat.

As a young man, mustard manufacturer Klinke had an affair with a dancer, the Spanish Fly . The dancer had a son and Klinke has been secretly paying maintenance ever since. Albert Wimmer and Anton Tiedemeier also had a relationship with the dancer. With the appearance of the dancer's son, Gottlieb Meisel, chaos breaks out. Who the young Gottlieb's real father is remains unclear. Unfortunately, Gottlieb Meisel has asked for Klinke's daughter's hand in marriage.

The first encounter between pretty fashion illustrator Jeanette and successful civil engineer Rudolf Siebert begins with a misunderstanding: when they meet at a party, she thinks he's an impoverished, but talented, painter whom she wants to help professionally. Siebert, realizing the error, plays along with a certain amount of amusement, not reveailng his true vocation to the woman. In fact, the painter she'd like to support and protect is Rudolf's friend Braubach, who is as bohemian as he is talented. Without further ado, the wealthy engineer persuades his friend to temporarily swap roles with him. And so Braubach becomes the engineer and Siebert the painter. It takes Jeanette some time to get the hang of the little game; but she doesn't take this charade with humor and initially feels quite annoyed. Overcome with disappointment, Jeanette initially doesn't want to have anything more to do with Rudolf, but when he makes it clear to her that there was no bad intention behind his game, she gradually softens again, because she actually can't be angry with him, the beloved liar .

Ihr gef llt der Mann sowohl als K nstler wie auch als Mensch. Siebert spielt mit einem gewissen Am sement mit und kl rt Jeanette auch nicht ber ihren Irrtum auf. Denn der Maler, den sie gern f rdern und protegieren m chte, ist Rudolfs Kumpel Braubach, der ebenso bohemienhaft wie talentiert ist. Kurzerhand berredet der wohlhabende Ingenieur seinen Freund dazu, mit ihm vor bergehend die Rollen zu tauschen: Und so wird aus Braubach der Ingenieur und aus Siebert der Maler. Jeanette braucht einige Zeit, bis sie hinter das kleine B umchen-wechsle-dich-Spiel kommt. Doch sie nimmt diese Scharade nicht mit Humor, sondern f hlt sich anf nglich sehr ersetzt. Von Entt uschung bermannt, will Jeanette zun chst nichts mehr von Rudolf wissen, doch als er ihr klarmacht, dass hinter seinem Spiel keine b se Absicht stand, l sst sie sich allm hlich wieder erweichen, denn eigentlich kann sie ihm, dem Geliebten L gner , gar nicht b se sein.
