Unable to make contact with friendly troops, Lieutenant Airoldi, originally from the area, crosses the Ticino and heads towards home to gather information on the movements of the Austrian troops. He reaches his family but, on the way back, he is spotted by enemy soldiers who chase him to the river. He manages to escape, but a young soldier who accompanied him is killed. The lieutenant, who knows the river, crosses it in a boat, finds the patrol and reports to the Captain, who decides to return to his own lines. During the journey, however, they come across an Austrian detachment and decide to attack it, managing to blow up an ammunition depot. They are chased across the countryside and take refuge in a farmhouse, where two of the farmers - one is a boy - join them.

Non riuscendo a prender contatto con le truppe amiche, il secondo ufficiale del gruppo, il tenente Airoldi, originario dei luoghi, attraversa il Ticino e si dirige verso la propria casa per raccogliere informazioni sui movimenti delle truppe austriache. Raggiunge così i suoi famigliari ma, durante il ritorno, viene individuato dai soldati nemici che lo inseguono sino al fiume. Egli riesce a fuggire, ma un giovane soldato che lo accompagnava viene ucciso. Il tenente, conoscitore del fiume, lo discende in barca, ritrova la pattuglia e fa rapporto al Capitano, che decide di rientrare nelle proprie linee. Durante il percorso, però, essi si imbattono in un distaccamento austriaco e decidono di attaccarlo, riuscendo a far saltare un deposito di munizioni. Vengono inseguiti per la campagna e si rifugiano in una cascina, dove due dei contadini - uno è un ragazzo - si uniscono a loro.
