Farmer Grillhofer is growing old and frail. His housekeeper, Rosl, looks after him, while the head farmhand, Wastl, manages the farm. Grillhofer’s brother-in-law, Dusterer, knows that twenty-five years ago, the farmer had an affair with his maid, Magdalen, who subsequently disappeared. Dusterer exploits this "worm of conscience" — as he calls it — to pressure Grillhofer into signing over his estate to him and his family; he claims this good deed would ensure Grillhofer’s place in Heaven rather than leaving him to roast in Hell. Horlacherlies' — with whom Wastl is in love — is sent to Grillhofer by her aunt, as she is a distant relative of his. Although she is supposed to try and "wheedle an inheritance" out of him, she lays her cards on the table right away. Grillhofer takes a liking to the girl, but Dusterer reminds him of the "worm of conscience.".

Bauer Grillhofer wird langsam alt und kränklich. Seine Wirtschafterin Rosl sorgt für ihn, während sich Großknecht Wastl um den Hof kümmert. Grillhofers Schwager Dusterer weiß, daß der Bauer sich vor fünfundzwanzig Jahren mit seiner Dienstmagd, der Riesler Magdalen, eingelassen hat, die daraufhin verschwunden ist. Diesen "G'wissenswurm", wie Dusterer sagt, nutzt er aus, um Grillhofer dazu zu bringen, ihm und seiner Familie sein Gut zu überschreiben. Für diese gute Tat würde er dann sicher in den Himmel kommen, statt in der Hölle zu schmoren. Die Horlacherlies', in die Grillhofers Großknecht Wastl verliebt ist, wird von ihrer "Mahm" zu Grillhofer geschickt, da sie entfernt mit ihm verwandt sei. Sie soll versuchen, "etwas erbzuschleichen", doch sie spielt gleich mit offenen Karten. Grillhofer mag das Mädchen, aber Dusterer erinnert ihn an den "G'wissenswurm".
