In the small town of Brescello, the seemingly endless war between the village priest Don Camillo and the communist mayor Bottazzi --- known as "Peppone" --- enters a new round. This time, everything revolves around the election of a representative for the Italian parlament. Peppone is running as a candidate of the Communist Party. Don Camillo is anything but benevolent about this and tries to sabotage Peppone's campaign as best he can. 

In dem kleinen Ort Brescello in der Poebene geht der schier unendlich erscheinende Kleinkrieg zwischen dem katholischen Dorfpfarrer Don Camillo und dem kommunistischen Bürgermeister Giuseppe Bottazzi, genannt Peppone, in eine neue Runde. Dieses Mal dreht sich alles um die Wahl eines Abgeordneten für das italienische Parlament. Peppone kandidiert für die von ihm vertretene Kommunistische Partei. Don Camillo betrachtet dies alles andere als wohlwollend und sabotiert den Wahlkampf nach seinen Möglichkeiten.
