Editorial reporter Hans Trautendorffer makes a bet with his newspaper's director on New Year's Eve: He will work as a farmer-servant for a year. In return, if he completes the task, he'll win 20,000 Kronen. If he fails, he'll have to work for his newspaper for half-pay for a full year. But his search for work in rural Austria only leads from one disappointment to another. Finally, he finds work on a small farm belonging to Adamshauser; but he must determine whether life on the farm is as wonderful as he previously waxed endlessly about.

Der Wirtschaftsredakteur Hans Trautendorffer schließt in der Silvesternacht mit seinem Zeitungsherausgeber eine Wette ab: Er wird ein Jahr lang als Bauernknecht arbeiten. Aber schon bei der Arbeitssuche gibt es die ersten Enttäuschungen. Endlich findet er am kleinen Hof des armen Adamshauser eine Stellung.
