DIE BRÜCKE - FLUCHT UND VERTREIBUNG (1949)

In the period from 1944 - 1949, it is estimated that millions of Germans from "the East" lost their lives either in flight before the conquering Red Army or at the hands of the vengeful liberated from Nazi rule.  For those who survived the terrible treks from their former homes into the defeated Germany, the problems did not miraculously end.  This 1950 film, made in the DDR, addresses the then modern-day problem in the form of (for the DDR) a very good drama.  This film concerns the resettlement of an entire village from the East into the new German borders and the apathy and outright hostility they experience at the hands of residents in their new hometown.  A bridge connects that part of town where the refugees live with the town centre where the original residents live and work.  The refugees need the bridge to go to work in the town and to get supplies, as well as to be able to assimilate with the residents; but the bridge is in fearful shape from war damage and no one seems interested in fixing the dangerous wreck (not the least because it would mean the refugees would then have the means to stay permanently).  Will the bridge be repaired and will it serve to join the old and new residents, both literally and figuratively?
