Die Geschichte dreier junger Menschen im Berlin der 1930er Jahre. Magdalena und Michael lieben sich. Jürgen, der Dritte im Bunde, arrangiert sich irgendwann mit den Nazis. Er will einfach in Ruhe leben. Michael und Magdalena hingegen wollen Widerstand leisten. Michael wird verhaftet und zu 15 Jahren Zuchthaus verurteilt. Als Magdalena ebenfalls in Gefahr gerät, hilft Jürgen, obwohl inzwischen Mitglied der SA, ihr aus der Klemme. Während des Krieges wird Michael in ein Strafbataillon verpflichtet. An der Front trifft er Jürgen wieder. Beide laufen zur Roten Armee über. Ob es ein Wiedersehen mit Magdalena gibt, die ebenfalls in den Reihen der Roten Armee kämpft, lässt der Film offen.

Magdalena and Michael, the “Konigskinder”, who cannot be a couple, though they want badly to be one, are two working class youths from Berlin.  They have sworn loyalty to one another.  But with the coming to power of the Nazis, their love is put to a difficult test.  Michael, a Communist, who will not bow to the Nazis, is sentenced to 15 years in prison.  Magdalena, who has always looked on Michael’s political activities with angst, comes to his side in these times of peril.  When she, too, finds herself in the path of serious trouble, a former friend, Jurgen, comes to her rescue, even though he is now in the SA.  When Michael is finally released from prison and sent into a penal company, he meets Jurgen once again, who in the interim has become a sergeant in the battalion.  Both end up together in the trenches; both end up deserting to the Bolsheviks.  Will Michael see Magdalena ever again?
