Farmer Grillhofer is slowly getting older and sickly. His housekeeper Rosl takes care of him, while the foreman Wastl looks after the farm. Grillhofer’s brother-in-law Dusterer knows that the farmer had sex with his servant Magdalena twenty-five years earlier, who then disappeared. This little piece of information allows Dusterer to blackmail the farmer into transferring ownership of the farm to him and his family. For doing so, he tells Grillhofer, he will surely go to Heaven instead of burning in Hell.

Bauer Grillhofer wird langsam alt und kränklich. Seine Wirtschafterin Rosl sorgt für ihn, während sich Großknecht Wastl um den Hof kümmert. Grillhofers Schwager Dusterer weiß, daß der Bauer sich vor fünfundzwanzig Jahren mit seiner Dienstmagd, der Riesler Magdalen, eingelassen hat, die daraufhin verschwunden ist. Diesen "G'wissenswurm", wie Dusterer sagt, nutzt er aus, um Grillhofer dazu zu bringen, ihm und seiner Familie sein Gut zu überschreiben. Für diese gute Tat würde er dann sicher in den Himmel kommen, statt in der Hölle zu schmoren.
