The village residents of Haselbach and Banzing have been enemies for decades. The reason for the enmity goes back to a horse theft, for which both villages were suspected of committing and of which both villages blamed the other. But the day of reconciliation has apparently arrived. In Haselbach’s tavern, Mayor Blasl states that the new symbol of friendship between the warring communities will be expressed in the marriage of his daughter Anna to Thomas, the son of Banzinger’s mayor, Ziechnaus. Unfortunately, neither of the kids is hot for the proposal and they’re both in love … but not with each other.

Schon seit Jahrzehnten sind die beiden Dörfer Haselbach und Banzing miteinander verfeindet. Auslöser der Fehde war einst ein Pferdediebstahl, bei dem beide Dörfer unter Verdacht standen und sich unentwegt gegenseitig der Tat beschuldigten. Nun aber soll der Tag der Versöhnung kommen. Im Wirtshaus von Haselbachs Bürgermeister Blasl einigen sich die Dorfältesten der verfeindeten Gemeinden darauf, dass als Symbol der neuen Freundschaft Anna, Bürgermeister Blasls Tochter, und Thomas, der Sohn des Banzinger Bürgermeisters Ziechnaus, heiraten sollen. Davon sind die zwei jungen Leute allerdings gar nicht begeistert, denn sie sind beide schon verliebt – nur nicht ineinander.
