POLITICAL FILMS OF THE REICH VII (2012) * with switchable English subtitles *

THE NEW GERMANY  (1934)

The events leading up to Adolf Hitler being named Reich’s chancellor and the celebratory procession afterwards are detailed in this 1934 Nazi film.

Approximately 10 minutes.  No dialogue; musical background.  German intertitles with switchable English subtitles.  Overall, very good quality.

LANDESBISCHOF PETER BESUCHT HALLE  (1934)

A rather curious film put out by the Nazis, which has very little to do with the title.  Sure, the bishop pays a visit to Halle and one can see he has nothing against the Nazis … quite the contrary.  But most of the film seems to have something to do with the wedding nuptials of some royalty at the local St. Moritz Church.

Approximately 4 minutes. No dialogue; musical background. German intertitles with switchable English subtitles.  Decent quality, though there are some pixellization issues.

FUR UNS – ZUM APPELL  (1937)

NS documentary about the Day of Remembrance and Honor to those who fell in the Beer Hall Putsch in 1923.  The upper crust of Germany’s leadership walk to Feldherrnhalle and lay wreaths and the names of the dead are read out … but why Horst Wessel’s name is mentioned and why there’s an honorary column with his name on it when he died seven years later in a street brawl is anyone’s guess.

Approximately 14 minutes.  In German with switchable English subtitles. Overall, very good quality.

THE DUCE IN GERMANY  (1937)

An official film put out about the Duce’s state visit to Germany in 1937.  Followed by …

Approximately 28 minutes.  In German; no subtitles. Overall, very good quality.

PRIVATE FILMS FROM MUSSOLINI’S VISIT TO BERLIN  (1937)

An amateur photographer captures the city and the events surrounding the abovementioned visit.

Approximately 2 minutes. No dialogue; musical background.  Overall, excellent quality.

REICHSTAGUNG DER AUSLANDSDEUTSCHEN IN STUTTGART  (1938)

Propaganda film of the sixth rally of foreign-residing Germans, who all came to Germany to celebrate their Germanness; the New Reich; and to party hardy with their overseas cousins.  Rudolf Hess makes a big show of telling them that their host countries shouldn’t feel insecure about they’re being loyal to an aggressive state, which has been licking its lips everytime it looks at its neighbors.  Uh huh.

Approximately 7 minutes. In German with switchable English subtitles. Overall, unsharp and somewhat fuzzy quality.

THE POLITICAL EVENTS OF 1938 – 1939

The significant events of 1938 – 1939 are presented here in excerpts from Wochenschauen.'

Approximately 11 minutes.  In German with switchable English subtitles. Overall, very good quality, depending on the film source.

SPORTING EVENT IN THE REICH  (1939)

Simply a private color film from 1939, showing some public sporting event somewhere in the Reich.

Approximately 3 minutes. No dialogue; musical background.  Overall, excellent quality.

DR. FRITZ TODT – HIS CALLING AND HIS ACHIEVEMENTS  (1942)

A memorial film put out by the National Socialists to honor the recently deceased Dr. Fritz Todt.  I know, we’ve introduced several films about Dr. Todt recently; but with his death, I promise you, this will be the last film about him you’ll see put out by us.

Approximately 36 minutes.  In German with hard-encoded English subtitles.

TOTAL DURATION:  APPROXIMATELY 115 minutes.
