THE HISTORY OF THE SA

By the time the Second World War came to an end, the SA (Sturmabteilung) played overall but a minor part in the daily life in the Third Reich.  Indeed, after the Night of the Long Knives in June 1934, when its leader, Roehm, and the majority of its most powerful and influential members were eliminated by its rival, the SS, the SA was almost looked upon as an inconsequential and almost comical anachronism in Hitler's Germany.  But it was not always so:  at the height of its power, the SA commanded over 4 1/2 million men and posed a serious potential threat not only to Hitler's hegemony in Germany, but to the country's armed forces.  And yet, while the SA never planned a putsch to overthrow Hitler, it's power was such that without it, Hitler would never have come to power.

This contemporary film, relying on film documentation and eyewitness testimony, tells the story of the SA from its humble origins to its role in the Machtergreifung and its fate after that fateful night in June 1934.
