En 1916, un soldat français rejoint la 7e compagnie, cantonnée sur le front de Verdun, dont il explique à sa mère, en buvant un thé, qu'il est fort calme. Sur place, le soldat déchante. Un camarade mieux informé, l'avertit : le haut commandement allemand va tenter de s'emparer de la ville. Les populations civiles sont évacuées. Les premiers coups de canons retentissent dans le ciel meusien. Le Bois des Caures essuie le premier assaut, terrible. Les chasseurs du lieutenant-colonel Driant se font massacrer presque jusqu'au dernier. L'offensive allemande, ralentie, se concentre alors sur le fort de Douaumont, qui lui oppose une résistance acharnée... 

In 1916, a French soldier, having joined the 7th Company stationed at the Verdun front, writes to his mother, drinking tea, that it’s very quiet there.  He is thus disillusioned, that no fighting is going on. A comrade, better informed, warns:  the German High Command will attempt to seize the city. Civilians are evacuated. The first cannon resounds in the Meuse sky. Caures Forest suffers the first, terrible assault. The defenders are slaughtered almost to the last. The German offensive slows, then focuses on Fort Douaumont, which offers stiff resistance ...
