DER BETTLER VOM KOLNER DOM  (1927): 

Der Interpol-Agent Tom Wilkins steigt - als indischer Maharadscha getarnt - im exklusiven Hotel Excelsior ab, um einer als Bettler verkleideten Diebesbande das Handwerk zu legen. In der Nobelherberge in Sichtweite des Doms logiert auch die schwerreiche Amerikanerin Mabel Strong. Auf sie haben es die Juwelendiebe, die im Hotel-Chauffeur einen Komplizen an zentraler Stelle sitzen haben, abgesehen. 

Interpol agent Tom Wilkens checks into the exclusive Hotel Excelsior in Cologne -- disguised as a wealthy Indian industrialist -- to foil a band of thieves led by a crook disguised as a beggar.  The very wealthy Mabel Strong is also staying in the hotel, which looks out on the city's famous cathedral.  The thieves are interested in laying their clutches on her, too; and they have accomplices in the hotel to help them achieve their ends.

LA FILLE DE L'EAU  (1925): 

Sur un canal, une péniche, à son bord Gudule une enfant solitaire, son père marinier, et l'oncle Jeff. Le père se noie, et Gudule n'a plus pour seule famille que son oncle. L'oncle est une brute qui dilapide l'héritage de sa nièce et tente de la violer. Gudule s'enfuit et se réfugie auprès de deux bohémiens : un jeune braconnier, « la Fouine », et sa mère, la Roussette. Mais « la Fouine », par ses mauvais coups, provoque la colère des paysans des alentours, qui brulent la roulotte familiale. Gudule, en se sauvant, fait une chute dans une carrière, s'endort à bout de force et s'enfonce dans un étrange rêve. Georges Raynal, fils d'un propriétaire terrien de la région, la recueille et la fait engager chez ses parents. Le misérable oncle Jeff retrouve Gudule et lui extorque de l'argent qu'elle est obligée de voler à Georges. 

Also known by the title Whirlpool of Fate, the lonely child Gudule lives on a canal barge with her sailor father and her abusive Uncle Jeff.  When the child's father drowns, Gudule has no one else left in the world except Jeff.  The uncle squanders the girl's inheritance and tries to rape her.  Gudule flees and takes refuge with two gypsies, a young poacher, 'the Weasel', and his mother 'Dogfish'.  But Weasel's mischief angers the local farmers, who set their family caravan on fire.  Gudule flees and falls into a pit, falling asleep with exhaustion and sinking into strange dreams.  Georges Raynal, the son of the region's major landowner, finds the girl and starts caring for her.  When she's found by Uncle Jeff, who tries to extort money from her, she turns to George for help.
