Der junge Stahlschmelzer Martin Hoff hat für alle sichtbar das Talent zum Schauspieler und Musiker. Er wird zum Schauspielstudium delegiert. Da er in seiner Überheblichkeit meint, schon alles zu können und weder Sprecherziehung noch Fechtunterricht zu brauchen, wird er kurzerhand vor die Tür gesetzt. Da begegnet ihm Ottilie, die ihn fasziniert. Auf einer Baustelle, wo er inzwischen wieder arbeitet, steht sie ihm als Bauleiterin gegenüber. Doch Ottilie hat mit dem Draufgänger nichts im Sinn. Erst als Martin sich um Ernsthaftigkeit und Zielstrebigkeit bemüht, kommt er ans Ziel seiner Wünsche. Er gewinnt Ottilie und schafft es auf die Bretter, die die Welt bedeuten.

The young steel smelter Martin Hoff has a visible talent as both an actor and musician.  He is thus sent off to study to become an actor.  Since, in his arrogance, he believes he’s able to do everything and neither needs elocution lessons nor even fencing instruction, he’s quickly shown the door.  That’s when he meets Ottilie, who fascinates him.  He ends up getting a job in construction, where he once again meets her; this time as his foreman.  But Ottilie has no interest in the daredevil.  Only when Martin embraces seriousness and determination is he able to reach his goal:  He wins over Ottilie and makes it on stage.
