The Fall of 1917.  The Russian Revolution shakes the foundations of all societies in the world.  The machinist Henne Lobke and the furnace operator Jens Kasten end up becoming sympathetic fraternizers with the Bolshevik troops on the Eastern Front.  They take part in the disarming of their officers, who intend to sink a Russian freighter.  Returning to Germany, they intend to export the Bolshevik revolution to home soils.  The workers at the Kiel docks and the sailors on the warships call for a mass strike against the War.  The admiralty, though, has other plans:  it wants to send the ships out on a massive attack against the British, something which will surely lead to a mass extermination of the rebellious sailors.  The sailors catch on to the plan however, and plan to defend themselves against the ordered suicide.

Historischer Hintergrund des Films ist der Kieler Matrosenaufstand. Während der Oktoberrevolution 1917 in Russland haben sich deutsche und russische Soldaten verbrüdert. Der Maschinist Henne Lobke und der Heizer Jens Kasten verhindern durch die Entwaffnung ihrer Offiziere, dass ein russischer Frachter versenkt wird. Inzwischen wächst auch in Deutschland die revolutionäre Stimmung. Als die Admiralität die Aktion "Nibelungen" gegen England befiehlt, um damit die deutsche Flotte der Vernichtung preiszugeben und die revolutionäre Stimmung zu unterdrücken, verweigern sich Matrosen und Soldaten unterschiedlicher politischer Gruppierungen.
