Berlin Anfang der 1950er Jahre. Zwei Westberliner Jungen träumen von einer Boxer-Karriere, doch fehlt ihnen das Geld für teure Boxhandschuhe. Bei einem Besuch des Ostberliner Zirkus Barley lernen sie das Mädchen Helli kennen. Mit ihr besuchen sie in der Pause die Tierschau. Sie dürfen noch einmal zur Geburt eines Fohlens kommen und erkennen in einem Tierpfleger den Mann, der in einer zwielichtigen Westberliner Kneipe ein und aus geht, in der die Jungen sich manchmal ein paar Groschen verdienen. Dort bekommen sie mit, dass der Wirt einen Pferdediebstahl im Zirkus Barley plant. Sie melden dies der Ostberliner Polizei. Die Aktion kann vereitelt werden und den Jungen werden zum Dank durch Barleys Elefanten Jumbo die ersehnten Boxhandschuhe überreicht.

A DEFA production.  Berlin, the beginning of the 1950s.  Two boys from West Berlin dream of a career in boxing, but they don’t have the money for the expensive boxing gloves.  While visiting Circus Barley in East Berlin, they get to know the girl Helli.  During a pause in the action, they visit the animal show.  They witness the birth of a foal and recognize the animal keeper as a man they’ve seen go in and out of a seedy bar in West Berlin, in which the boys earn a few pennies.  It’s there that they overhear the owner planning to steal horses from Circus Barley.  They pass on this information to the East Berlin police.  Thanks to them, the planned theft is stopped in its tracks and Barley’s elephant Jumbo hands over the long-desired boxing gloves to them in the ring.
