Im venezianischen Karneval des 19. Jahrhunderts wettet der Frauenheld Colloredo, dass er Giacinta, die keusche Gattin des Mexikaners Zubaran, in einer Nacht verführen könne. Als Zubaran das hört, schlägt er Colloredo einen halsbrecherischen Wetteinsatz vor: ein Duell, in dem der Gewinner den ersten Schuss frei hat. Colloredo indessen verliebt sich aufrichtig in Giacinta, und es gelingt ihm tatsächlich, ihr Herz zu erobern. Verführen lässt sie sich dennoch nicht. Um ihre Ehre zu wahren, gesteht Colloredo edelmütig seine Niederlage ein und stellt sich dem sicheren Tod durch Zubarans Kugel.

During a carneval in Venice in the 19th Century, the ladies' man Colloredo bets that he can seduce the wife of the Mexican Zubaran. When Zubaran hears about it, he suggests to Colloredo a second hair-raising bet: a duel, in which the winner of the first bet gets to shoot first. In fact, Colloredo is in love with the Mexican's wife and has succeeded in winning her heart. Nonetheless, she won't let herself be led astray. To protect her honor, Colloredo nobly admits to a defeat he did not suffer and puts himself in the line of certain death from Zubaran's bullet.
