Late 1944: The Germans are retreating everywhere along the Eastern Front with the Red Army in hot pursuit. In northern Norway, an area as large as all of Denmark is burnt into non-existence --- the Germans have decided to apply their tactic of Scorched Earth, which they've applied everywhere in occupied Russia, to this part of Norway as well. 60,000 people living there are forced to evacuate. 11,000 homes; 116 schools and 21 hospitals are put to the torch. Quays, bridges and power plants are dynamited. The goal is to leave the Russians a desert, from which they can't hope to obtain supplies or food during their offensive. When the order to evacuate comes, many Norwegian families flee into the mountains. There, they form a small community, living in caves throughout the War's last winter and fully aware, that returning back into the valleys --- even for a brief instant --- might lead to their death at the hands of the murderous Germans. Hoping to reclaim their homes by Christmas 1944, they cautiously emerge from hiding places to hopefully find just a small spot in their former cellars to start their lives over again.

DVD-R is in Norwegian with switchable English subtitles.  Approx. 97 mins. See film sample for audio and video quality!
