In a Danish village in 1625, an old woman Herlof's Marte is accused of witchcraft, which she had confessed to, in order to save Anne, whose mother had already been a victim of the accusation.  Anne is newly married to the local Pastor, Absalon Pedersson, who is involved in the trials of witches, and they live in a house shared with his strict domineering mother Meret.  Meret does not approve of Anne: she is much younger than her husband, and even younger than the son from his first marriage.  Eventually, the accusations of witchcraft against one spills over into fear and paranoia against others and the cycle of evil, which the townspeople are allegedly trying to destroy, is created and perpetuated by themselves.

Sein Sohn Martin ist ungefähr gleich alt und schon bald verlieben sich Anne und Martin ineinander. Diese Beziehung findet vor dem Hintergrund der Geißel der Hexenjagden im Stil der spanischen Inquisition statt. Für den Angeklagten wird das Ergebnis auf dem Scheiterhaufen verbrannt.
