March 1945: American bombers head for the capital of Ostmark, Vienna. Thousands of civilians die. German air defense is practically non-existent due to heavy losses and a lack of fuel. While the 3rd Ukrainian Amry is heading for the city from the direction of the Hungarian border, SS Hitlerjugend, Wehrmacht and Volkssturm units offer sporadic resistance. On 13 May, Stalin informs the world that Vienna is now in Soviet hands. American forces occupy Braunau and Linz. In western Austria, the French claim their zone of occupation; while in Carinthia, the British set up theirs. When victory is complete, the Allies inform the Austrians that Vienna, too, will be divided into four zones of occupation ... a fate which has already been decided for the former German Reich as well.  

This documentary shows the events of 1945/46, when Austria exchanged Anschluss with Nazi Germany for occupation and eventual rebirth.

Mai verkündet Stalin: Wien ist in sowjetischer Hand! US-Truppen besetzen Braunau und Linz, in Westösterreich rücken die Franzosen vor, in Kärnten die Engländer. Nach dem Sieg richten sich die Alliierten ein: Wien wird in vier Zonen aufgeteilt, die Loslösung Österreichs von Deutschland ist bereits beschlossen.
