HITLERs ATLANTIC WALL + DER OSTWALL

HITLER'S ATLANTIC WALL:

After the conquest of the countries bordering the Atlantic, German troops were forced to protect a nearly 3,000-kilometer-long coastline.  It was feared that British and American troops might land in either France or Denmark and Norway.  From 1942 on, the construction of the Atlantic Wall began.  The Atlantic Wall was to form a chain of bunkers, which would make it impossible for Germany's enemies to invade the European mainland.  This chain, which, until 1944, made up nearly 10,000 bunkers, ranged from the North Cape in Norway, along the North Sea coast of Germany and Denmark, the Netherlands and Belgium and along the Atlantic coast to the Bay of Biscay in France near the Spanish border.

DER OSTWALL:

The East Wall (German: Ostwall) was a German defensive line on the Eastern Front during World War II,  and built after the Battle of Kursk.  While it appeared that in ordering the construction of the East Wall, that Adolf Hitler had accepted a general retreat on the Eastern Front as inevitable, subsequent decisions revealed that he actually intended to establish a barrier behind which the armies could not retreat.  Beginning in the south at Melitopol, the wall ran due north to the Dnjeper River, advancing to Kiev and the Desna River to Chernigov.
