Carl, a young tenor, and his friend Probst have composed a melody, to which the young pianist Erna has contributed the text. Carl loves Erna, but when the friends are harassed at a press conference by creditors, Probst spontaneously invents an impending engagement between Carl and the daughter of a billionaire, Thea.
