Vroni Mareiter, from the castle estate Saturn, has had to spend the summer managing the estate, Hals-Alm. The farewell from the valley will be especially difficult for her this year, for she has fallen head over heels for Vinzenz Brunner, the son and heir of the Brunnerhof farmers, a somewhat reckless man, who has been known to make many a woman fall for him. For Vinzenz, the affair with Vroni was apparently just one of many such episodes; but for Vroni, a very meaningful experience. Of course, Vroni knows nothing of Vinzenz' plans to marry the girl von Saturn, the daughter of the lord of the castle. Melanie von Saturnis not only a rich heiress, whose father owns the debt note owed by the Brunnerhofs; she is also a pretty girl.

Vroni Mareiter – vom Schlossgut Saturn – hat den Sommer über die Hals-Alm zu bewirtschaften. In diesem Jahr wird ihr der Abschied vom Tal besonders schwer. Denn Vinzenz Brunner, der Sohn und Erbe des Brunnerhofbauern, ein etwas leichtsinniger Mensch, der allen Frauen den Kopf verdreht – dieser Teufelskerl Vinzenz hat einen Winter lang Vroni Mareiter sehr lieb gehabt. Für Vinzenz war das anscheinend eine seiner vielen Episoden, für Vroni aber das große starke Erlebnis. Freilich ahnt sie nichts davon, dass Vinzenz das Fräulein von Saturn, Tochter des Schlossherrn, zu heiraten gedenkt. Melanie v. Saturn ist nicht nur eine reiche Erbin, deren Vater im Besitz der Schuldscheine über den Brunnerhof ist, sondern auch ein hübsches Mädel.
