Prussia in the 18th Century during the time of the Seven Years' War: the Prussian major von Tellheim has arrived in Saxony with his regiment, where he will quarter for the winter in Castle Bruchsall. The castle is run by Minna von Barnhelm, the niece of Count Bruchsall. In the surrounding villages, the populace is not exactly sympathetic to the Prussians; the residents of these towns demand contributions from Minna at such a high amount, it is impossible for her to raise the sum. So as to protect the castle from plundering by the townspeople, von Tellheim gives her a considerable amount of money ... a gesture of friendship and kindness, which will be his undoing.

Preußen, während des Siebenjährigen Krieges im 18. Jahrhundert: Preußenmajor von Tellheim kommt mit seinem Regiment nach Sachsen, wo er im Schloss Bruchsall sein Winterquartier bezieht. Geführt wird das Schloss von Minna von Barnhelm, der Nichte des Grafen Bruchsall. In den umliegenden Dörfern ist man den Preußen nicht gerade wohlgesonnen, die Bewohner verlangen Kontributionen in einer Höhe, die Minna unmöglich aufbringen kann. Um sie vor einer Plünderung durch das Dorfvolk zu bewahren, streckt von Tellheim eine beträchtliche Summe vor – ein Freundschaftsdienst, der ihm zum Verhängnis wird.
