Billy and her father work a hard life as artists. In actuality, they are aristocracy, but the old Count Priessnitz disowned his son after he ran off with a girl from the circus. When Billy can no longer suffer the life of poverty, she writes to her grandfather and reluctantly agrees to be groomed in the way an aristocrat should be. But when the servants discover to their horror that Billy is actually a woman, she has to disguise herself as a man to not be rejected out of hand by her grandfather. The teacher Flint is hired to educate the wild child, but Billy falls in love with him on the spot.

Die junge Billy und ihr Vater schlagen sich als Artisten mühevoll durchs Leben. Eigentlich sind sie Aristokraten, doch der alte Graf Prießnitz hatte seinen Sohn verstoßen, als dieser mit einer Dame vom Zirkus durchgegangen ist. Als Billy die Armut nicht mehr ertragen kann, schreibt sie an den Großvater und der willigt widerwillig ein, den männlichen Nachfahren namens Billy aufzunehmen. Als der Diener entsetzt feststellt, dass Billy eine Frau ist, muss sie sich als Mann verkleiden, um beim Großvater eine Chance zu haben. Sofort wird für den unerzogenen Enkel Lehrer Flint engagiert, in den sich die junge Dame auf der Stelle verliebt.
