The war in Europe is coming to an end. Soviet troops are advancing and liberating the Germans' notorious concentration and extermination camps. In one of them, a group of prisoners manages to escape with the help of a Polish doctor. In a forest hideout, they encounter other victims of the Germans who have been living there for months, afraid of being discovered by the Fascists. Fearing discovery by the retreating German forces, they dare not leave the forest, even when their food runs low.

Während gegen Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs die sowjetischen Truppen auf dem Vormarsch sind, kann eine Gruppe von KZ-Häftlingen mithilfe eines polnischen Arztes fliehen. In einem Waldversteck treffen sie auf weitere Verfolgte, die dort schon seit Monaten in ständiger Angst vor Entdeckung ausharren. Aus Furcht vor deutschen Patrouillen wagen sie sich nicht aus dem Wald, auch als die Nahrungsmittel knapp werden.
