Aleksandr Pushkinin novelliin löyhästi perustuva traaginen tarina majakanvartijan tyttärestä, joka ajautuu kaupunkiin päätyen lopulta ilotytöksi. Nuori taiteilija kuitenkin löytää Riitan (Linnanheimo)malliksi rakkauden risti nimiseen maalaukseensa.Tulio maalaa taitavasti kuvia aurinkoisella rantakalliolla leikittelevästä ja toisaalta synkässä satamassa vaeltavasta Riitasta. Ja synkyyttä tässäkin teoksessa on aivan riittävästi. Moraalinen opetus on myöskin vahva, yksikin väärä päätös voi ajaa perikatoon. Synkyydestä ja kaikesta epätoivosta huolimatta tämä on ehdottomasti katsomisen arvoinen teos, joka tuskin jättää kylmäksi. 

The film is loosely based on Alexander Pushkin's tragic short story, "The Stationmaster", except in this case, the plot revolves around a lighthouse keeper's daughter, desperate to escape the drab and isolated life on the coast.  When a shipwrecked playboy meets her, she is seduced away from the stifling protection of her father and whisked off to the city, where, instead of living the life of her dreams, she ends up becoming a prostitute.  She is discovered, however, by a young artist, who asks Ritta to model for a painting to be called "The Cross of Love".  Similar in some respects to "Die Goldene Stadt", the film pulls no punches about the unfortunate path the girl sets out upon, the artist's unrealistic love of her, and the tragic fate that awaits all.
