Eva Hügler kann ihr Hotel nicht eröffnen, weil sie sich in finanziellen Schwierigkeiten befindet. Sie wendet sich an einen reichen Bekannten, der sie seit Jahren mit Heiratsanträgen verfolgt, was ihr Oberkellner Peter gar nicht gerne sieht. Da bekommt das Hotel plötzlich viele Gäste, nachdem ein nahe gelegenes Diätsanatorium abgebrannt ist. Die Gäste benehmen sich wie Verrückte. Aus dem Wechselspiel von Normal- und Irresein entwickelt sich eine turbulente Posse, mit dem Erfolg, dass man am Schluss alle für übergeschnappt hält. Doch ein Scheck erweist sich glücklicherweise trotzdem als echt. Die Hypothek für das Hotel kann bezahlt und die Verlobung der Hotelbesitzerin mit ihrem getreuen Peter gefeiert werden.

Schabernack (Hoax) gets under way when heroine Eva (Trude Marlen) finds herself too broke to open her hotel for the season. Next door to Eva's establishment is a sanitarium, chock full of wealthy eccentrics. When the sanitarium burns down, its occupants move into Eva's hotel, whereupon it is assumed by the townsfolk that the girl is now in charge of a lunatic asylum. Thus it is that a wealthy and decidedly non-eccentric customer who checks in at the hotel is considered to be crazy and treated accordingly. All of this Marx Brothers-like zaniness is offset by the "normal" romance between Eva and her headwaiter Peter.  If this appeals to you, you might also like the similar The Jolly Fellows from 1934.
