The aged composer Stefan Melchior falls in love with the young countess Ilka and leaves his wife and children for her. But his love has grown to such an obsession that he kills a rival out of jealousy and ends up in prison for 12 years. While in jail, he experiences an extensive purification; but when he is finally let out of prison and goes back to his wife, she is already dying.

Der gealterte Komponist Stefan Melchior verfällt der jungen Gräfin Ilka und verlässt für sie Frau und Kinder. Seine Liebe wächst zu solcher Besessenheit, dass er eifersüchtig einen Nebenbuhler tötet und dafür zwölf Jahre im Gefängnis landet. Dort erlebt er umfassende Läuterung; doch als er endlich entlassen wird und zu seiner Frau zurückkehrt, liegt sie bereits im Sterben.
