He is denounced, however, by his rival, Professor Karin, as being too old and too mentally unstable for the mission. Aided by his assistant Marina and a boy named Andriusha, Professor Sedych ignores Professor Karin's authority and takes off for the Moon. Shot as a silent film, Cosmic Voyage had but a brief appearance in early 1936, before quickly being quashed by Soviet censors (apparently, they felt that the stop-motion animated sequences of cosmonauts hopping across the Moon were antithetical to the spirit of Socialist Realism. The censors should really have chilled a little: after all, this was obviously science fiction. Had this been a real event, Professor Sedych would have been arrested, interrogated by the NKVD, and send to an eastern penal camp for disobeying the orders of his superiors!
