1801, Vienna. Two of Beethoven's pupils are in love with him.  Therese de Brunswick's love has remained unrequited, even though she and Beethoven have been engaged for years. Beethoven's real love is reserved for Juliette Guicciardi, but she's married a count; and by the time she comes to regret that move, Beethoven and Therese have become engaged. When Beethoven loses Juliette, he moves to a mill at Heiligenstadt. When he realizes he's losing his hearing, a profound depression sets in. Tempted by suicide, he rejects it in favor of continuing his work, a dedication to which is assisted by Therese and others. In his later years, he'll not only have to contend with the ironic disability, but with an ungrateful and thieving nephew; poverty; the isolation caused by his deafness; and the love of friends and admirers.
