The story of the man who spent his life as a thief and a cheat begins and ends with personal misfortune. When he was a young boy, he was caught stealing money from the family shop. As punishment, he was not allowed to join his family on their picnic. They ate mushrooms and died of food poisoning. The boy was placed in the care of an unscrupulous aunt and uncle, who intended to rob him of his inheritance. Years later, he ends up as a croupier in a casino in Morocco. There, he embarks on what looks to be a very lucrative career –a professional cheat.

Un homme, depuis son enfance, n'a qu'une seule ambition, devenir riche. Pour cela il a decide de devenir tricheur et voleur professionnel. A douze ans, il survit a l'empoisonnement collectif dans lequel perit sa famille: pour avoir vole des champignons, il avait ete puni et n'avait pas pu en manger.
