A horrible accident has deprived the successful artist Imhoff of his sight -- a sheet of flame leapt from the oven, in which he was hardening his sculpture and now his career seems to be at an end. An experimental eye surgery has failed. While laying in his hospital bed, the sensitive nurse Agnes cares for her patient. She gives him courage, when hopelessness threatens to plunge him into despair. Thus, a sweet love develops slowly between the patient and the caregiver. Finally, the two marry and the artist’s first attempt to overcome his handicap will be for him to make a sculpture of his wife’s face. But since Imhoff has never seen Agnes before, she’s afraid he’ll create an idealistic picture of her, which will be unjust.

Ein furchtbares Unglück raubt dem erfolgreichen Künstler Imhoff das Augenlicht - eine Stichflamme schießt aus dem Ofen, in dem er seine Plastiken härtet, und seine Karriere scheint beendet. Ein Versuch, ihm operativ das Augenlicht zurückzugeben, misslingt. Während er im Krankenbett liegt, kümmert sich die sensible Krankenschwester Agnes in rührender Weise um ihren Patienten. Sie gibt ihm Mut, wenn er zu verzweifeln droht. So entwickelt sich langsam eine zarte Liebe zwischen Patient und Pflegerin. Schließlich heiraten Imhoff und Agnes, und sein erster Versuch, auch blind der Bildhauerei nachzugehen, soll eine Plastik vom Gesicht seiner Frau sein. Da Imhoff jedoch Agnes noch nie gesehen hat, fürchtet sie, er werde ein Idealbild von ihr schaffen, dem sie nicht gerecht wird.
