Um die Hypothek, die auf seinem Frachtkahn lastet, schneller abbezahlen zu können, lässt sich der kleine Schiffseigner Heinrich Borchert auf ein riskantes Spiel ein: Er nimmt mehr Ladung an Bord, als erlaubt ist und riskiert damit einen gefährlichen Tiefgang. Sein Sohn Karl ahnt nicht, dass sein Vater dies nur für ihn tut – denn Borchert will, dass es seinem Sohn einmal besser geht als ihm selbst. Doch der lebenshungrige Karl interessiert sich gar nicht für das Geschäft seines Vaters. Zur Zeit hat er ohnehin nur Augen für die hübsche Schiffbau-Studentin Marie. Erst als es bei einem Sturm zur Katastrophe zu kommen droht, kommen Vater und Sohn zur Vernunft.

In order to more quickly pay off the bank, which is holding a mortgage on his barge, the small ship-owner Heinrich Borchert decides on a risky game:  He takes more cargo on board than he’s permitted and sails out into dangerously deep waters.  His son Karl doesn’t suspect, that his father’s only doing this for him – for Borchert only wants, that his son have a better life than he’s had.  But the boy, who has a lust for life, has no interest in his father’s work.  At the moment, he’s only interested in the beautiful shipbuilding student, Marie.  Only when a storm threatens a serious catastrophe will father and son finally work together as one.
