Komtess Franziska ist mit ihrem Verlobten Baron Sperling unterwegs nach Würzburg, als ihre Kutsche im nächtlichen Spessart mit einem gebrochenen Rad liegen bleibt. Im Gegensatz zu dem ängstlichen Sperling zeigt die junge Dame sich nicht sonderlich beunruhigt, sondern folgt arglos dem Rat zweier Galgenvögel, in einem nahen Wirtshaus Quartier zu nehmen. Das ist natürlich eine Räuberhöhle, und das Gesindel hat es auf die Komtess abgesehen. 20.000 Gulden Lösegeld soll Graf Sandau für sein Töchterchen berappen. Als die Bande triumphierend abzieht, ahnt keiner der Burschen, dass man zwar eine echte Zofe, aber die falsche Komtess hat. Franziska hat nämlich heimlich mit dem jungen Wanderburschen Felix die Kleider getauscht und ist längst verschwunden. Als ihr Vater sich weigert, das Lösegeld zu bezahlen, und stattdessen das Räubernest vom Militär ausheben lassen will, treibt es die kecke Komtess allerdings zurück in den Schlupfwinkel der Bande. Verkleidet schafft sie es schnell, Bursche des schmucken Räuberhauptmanns zu werden. Der gefällt ihr viel besser als der fade Sperling, und so hat sie überhaupt nichts dagegen, dass er sie nach manchen aufregenden Abenteuern auf seine Weise davor bewahrt, den ungeliebten Baron heiraten zu müssen. 

Countess Francisca is on the way to Wurzburg with her fiancee, Baron Sperling, when their coach drives into a pit during the night and suffers a broken wheel.  In contrast to the anxious baron, the young ladies traveling with him don't appear to be particularly worried.  They unsuspectingly take the advice of two robbers to take shelter in a nearby inn.  The inn turns out to be a den of thieves and a gang of robbers have it in for the countess.  If Count Sandau wants his daughter back, he'll have to give the robbers 20,000 Gulden in ransom.  No one among the thieves is aware, that while they have an actual hostage, it's not the countess, but a boy dressed up as one; for Francisca has secretly swapped her clothes with a young wanderer named Felix and has long since disappeared.  When her father refuses to pay the ransom and instead sends a military expedition to clean out the nest of robbers, the countess returns to the inn.  Disguised as a boy, she quickly finds a way to end up as the robber captain's servant boy.  Unfortunately for Baron Sperling, the countess now finds the head of the robbers more desirable than the baron.  In fact, she has no problem with the idea of accompanying the captain on his raids rather than returning home to be the baron's wife.
