A Red Army man is captured by the Germans and is moved from one concentration camp to another, witnessing much cruelty along the way.  After being liberated, fate takes him to Argentina, where he ends up working for a German landowner and his Russian wife.  He subsequently goes to Germany, where he works as a chauffeur for a rich family.  Finally, after being away from Russia for more than 17 years, he returns home. The movie begins with him meeting a mother and daughter during their drive to visit relatives.  It turns out the mother was saved by this man during the blockade of Leningrad by the Germans.  Frozen and unconscious, he took her home and cared for her.  After the War ended, it took the woman another five years to find her daughter.  

A film filled with powerful emotions and supplemented by wonderful scenic views of the Soviet Union in the 1960s.
