Chaotische Zustände im Baltikum nach dem Ende des Ersten Weltkriegs: Statt nach dem verlorenen Krieg sich wie viele bequem irgendwo im liberalen Berlin der Zwanziger zurückzuziehen, quartiert sich der preußische Offizier Erich von Lhomond in dem schwer durchschaubaren russischen Bürgerkrieg mit seinem Freikorps in das zerschossene baltische Schloss seines Freundes Konrad von Reval ein, um es gegen die Rotgardisten zu verteidigen. Konrads Schwester Sophie von Reval verliebt sich in Erich, wird von ihm jedoch zurückgewiesen – er und ihr Bruder haben ein Verhältnis miteinander (im Film nur angedeutet). Sophie will die Abweisung nicht akzeptieren. Doch im weiteren Verlauf gibt sie auf – oder doch nicht? Sie verlässt nämlich das Schloss und schließt sich den Rotgardisten an, also den Feinden von Konrad und Erich. Nachdem Konrad gefallen ist, wird Sophie schließlich von Erichs Truppe gefangen genommen – in einem Krieg, in dem keine Gefangenen mehr gemacht werden. Sie wünscht, von Erich persönlich erschossen zu werden.

Erich von Lhomond, a former Freikorps officer who is later wounded in the Spanish Civil War, reminisces about his past experiences in the Baltic States during the Russian Civil War while convalescing in Italy. It is 1919.  The First World War has ended, but the Baltic States are embroiled in their fight for freedom from the nascent Soviet state, which itself is deeply divided by a civil war between the Reds and their enemies.  Von Lhomond, a Prussian officer and now leader of a volunteer corps, has quartered himself with his White Guards in Kratovice, in the decaying castle of his childhood friend, Konrad von Reval and his sister.  However, there is a romantic relationship in their past and this leads to problems when it is determined that Sophie -- Konrad's sister -- has joined the Reds. In a future battle, von Lhomond's corps ends up in battle with the Red Guard unit, to which Sophie now belongs.  It has come to a point in the conflict where prisoners are no longer being taken and Sophie is to be shot after a brief interrogation.  The problem?  She wants Erich to be the one to shoot her in the head.
