Première Guerre mondiale. Deux soldats français sont faits prisonniers par le commandant von Rauffenstein, un Allemand raffiné et respectueux. Conduits dans un camp de prisonniers, ils aident leurs compagnons de chambrée à creuser un tunnel secret. Mais à la veille de leur évasion, les détenus sont transférés. Ils sont finalement emmenés dans une forteresse de haute sécurité dirigée par von Rauffenstein. Celui-ci traite les prisonniers avec courtoisie, se liant même d'amitié avec Boeldieu. Mais les officiers français préparent une nouvelle évasion. 

The First World War.  Two French officers are taken prisoner and brought to a POW camp, where they help their fellow prisoners dig an escape tunnel.  But just as they're about to carry out their escape plans, the officers are rounded up and transferred to a more secure camp run by Major von Rauffenstein, a refined German with a particular affection for everything French.  At this new camp, the prisoners are treated with the utmost courtesy and a sort of friendly understanding develops between the French aristocrat Boeldieu and the Major.  However, this does not stop the Frenchmen from planning yet another escape.
