The water level is rising; the dam is no longer able to hold back the mass of water ... it breaks! Panic breaks out and everyone tries to save at least something of their possessions from the flood. Anyone who can, drags himself up to the farm of the old dike captain, Doorn. His sons Peter and Heinrich help wherever they can. They rescue the local teacher and his pretty daughter Renate from certain death. Both men love Renate … couldn’t care less, whether they saved the teacher or not, but figured the daughter would be annoyed, if they didn’t try. In their competition for the love of Renate, both brothers become enemies.

Der Pegel des Stroms steigt, der Damm kann die Wassermassen nicht mehr halten – er bricht. Panik bricht aus, jeder versucht, wenigstens einen Teil seiner Habe vor den Fluten zu retten. Wer es schafft, rettet sich hinauf auf den Hof des alten Deichhauptmanns Doorn. Dessen Söhne Peter und Heinrich helfen, wo sie nur können. So retten sie den örtlichen Lehrer und dessen hübsche Tochter Renate vor dem sicheren Tod. Beide Männer lieben Renate, doch nicht nur durch diese Konkurrenz werden die Brüder zu Feinden.
