Film adaptation of the play by Gotthold Ephraim Lessing.  This pacifistic drama, praised in its time as being revolutionary, takes place in Jerusalem at the time of the Third Crusade.  Christians, Jews and Muslims live side-by-side in the biblical city.  When the Jew Nathan returns home from a business trip, he learns that his foster daughter Recha had been rescued by a Templar knight.  The knight, in turn, owes his life to the clemency shown him by the Muslim Sultan Saladin.  While a thankful Nathan convinces the knight to pay him a visit, Saladin is plagued by financial concerns.  He has Nathan brought to him and decides to test his legendary wisdom by asking his opinions on “the true religion”.  Nathan answers him with a parable about a ring, from which Saladin quickly grasps the message of equality among the three monotheistic religions.  Deeply impressed, Saladin asks permission to be Nathan’s friend.  In the meantime, the Christian knight has fallen in love with Recha.

In der biblischen Stadt leben Angehörige des Christentums, des Judentums und des Islam Seite an Seite. Als der Jude Nathan von einer Geschäftsreise heimkehrt, erfährt er, dass seiner Pflegetochter Recha von einem christlichen Tempelherrn das Leben gerettet wurde. Der Ordensmann wiederum verdankt sein Leben der Begnadigung durch den muslimischen Sultan Saladin. Während der dankbare Nathan den Tempelherrn zu einem Besuch überredet, hat Saladin Geldsorgen – er lässt Nathan zu sich bringen und gibt vor, dessen legendäre Weisheit zu testen: So fragt er ihn nach der "wahren Religion". Darauf antwortet Nathan ihm mit der Ringparabel, in der Saladin rasch die Aussage der Gleichberechtigung unter den drei monotheistischen Religionen erkennt. Tief beeindruckt bittet Saladin darum, Nathans Freund sein zu dürfen. Derweil hat sich der christliche Tempelherr in Recha verliebt.
