During the First World War, English ships sink a German cruiser, the "Dresden", off the coast of Chile. The crew manages to rescue itself and reach an isolated island, where they bury their dead and then end up being taken prisoner. After three years, the sailors manage to escape, inspired by the thought of continuing the fight for their Fatherland. But the fortunes of war have changed for Germany and when the sailors return to Germany, they are ridiculed and attacked by mutineering sailors. Disappointed, the sailor Carl Ohlesen returns to the lonely island and lives out his life as a Robinson Crusoe. Later, over a radio receiver, he hears how things have changed in 1930s Germany and when the new "Dresden" passes the island, he makes his way to it and is happily taken onboard by his new circle of comrades.

Im Ersten Weltkrieg sinkt nach einem Angriff englischer Schiffe der deutsche Kreuzer "Dresden" vor Chile. Die Besatzung rettet sich auf eine einsame Insel, begräbt dort ihre Toten und gerät dann in Gefangenschaft. Nach drei Jahren gelingt den Seeleuten die Flucht, beseelt von dem Gedanken, wieder fürs Vaterland zu kämpfen. Aber in Deutschland werden sie verhöhnt und von Meuterern angegriffen. Enttäuscht kehrt der Matrose Carl Ohlsen zurück auf die einsame Insel und führt ein Leben als Robinson. Über einen Rundfunkempfänger erfährt er von den Veränderungen in Deutschland, und als später die neue "Dresden" seine Insel passiert, schlägt er sich zu dem Schiff durch und wird freudig in den Kreis der Kameraden aufgenommen.
